Note: I know prices are subject to change, but I'd like to point out that the introductory offer of $8.99 per episode (or $9.99 HD) is wildly excessive for something that aired for free.

The History Channel has been trying to stretch its wings in recent years and adapt into a more competitive TV marketplace (that's why some of their reality programs seem less and less connected to actual history). Last year, they commissioned their first dramatic mini-series, "The Kennedys," which they then decided not to air due to outside pressures. REELZ picked up "The Kennedys," it became a hit for them, and it won multiple EMMYs at last year's ceremony. Well, I guess the ancestors of the Hatfields and the McCoys don't have as much political clout as the remaining Kennedy clan, because no complaints stopped the ambitious three part "Hatfields and McCoys" from airing. Proving that there is still life for the mini-series format outside of premium cable, "Hatfields and McCoys" was an instant success and a ratings blockbuster. With 13.9 viewers (for the initial broadcast), the show became the number one rated non-sporting event in basic cable history. Pretty good news for the network! Pretty good news for the viewers as well, it almost ensures we'll see History continue to dabble in dramatic programming.

Many already know the story behind this classic feud, so I'll be brief. This is a solidly constructed and well acted project. Kevin Costner does a good job as the stoic Hatfield patriarch and Bill Paxton has a showier bit as the head of the McCoy clan. As the program begins, there are so many peripheral characters that it might take a bit to align everyone into their proper relationships. Once that is done, however, I think each part of the mini-series gets progressively more involving.

Highly recommend this series. Did not think I would like it when I first started watching it since I'm not usually into period pieces. But I couldn't wait to watch it each night. Acting is excellent and production is well done. Kudos to Costner. But man oh man, what a couple of royally screwed up families these two were.

How many of us grew up using the term the "Hatfields and McCoys" never really knowing what the story was about, but as a figure of speech? I know I did whenever I saw two groups of people feuding over something stupid. Well this movie tells the true historical story behind that common usage in our language. I have never been that big of a Kevin Costner fan but this movie is equal to his performance in Dances with Wolves, which is to say outstanding!! All of the acting is great and the entire story kept me on the edge of my seat. In fact once it was over I just had to know more and actually did some of my own research of the subject. This series is truly a docu-drama and historically very accurate as to the cause and effect of this ongoing feud that spilled so much blood after the Civil War ended. Well done and worth seeing from start to finish. I give it an A+!

Kevin Costner is a master story-teller. Though he's had some grand flops at the theatre (Water World, Wyatt Earp, The Postman), IMHO it wasn't due to a bad story or how the story was told. Culturally, Americans have evolved into having the attention span of a gnat, so anything that isn't filled with explosives or low brow humor isn't given its proper due. “The Hatfields & McCoys” is one of those excellently told stories that you must sit down, watch with intent and feel. The casting is perfect (as it always is when Kevin Costner is helping to produce a movie) and the story fans out like a slow burn or a cloud of gray smoke that lingers in the air from someone's cigarette. While clearly there had to be some liberties taken with details of the story, for the most part, it seems like they got it right and showed how the tension between these two families started and how it just simmered for decades.

Well worth your time!

I was stuck to my chair while watching this. It is very well done, I think, and the actors did a great job. I do believe that history was followed with it. If your looking for something that gives you an idea what was behind the feud between these two families, this is it.

One of the greatest true documentaries I have ever seen. If you like westerns, you will love this and even if you don't like westerns, this is one of the best Historically true stories with great actors and actresses. It sets the record straight and leaves no doubts about the FEUD! I highly recommend it to anyone over 18.

My husband and I really enjoyed watching the Hatfields & McCoys on Amazon Instant Video over the past 3 weeks. With the two of us coming from Kentucky and south-western Virginia, it certainly seemed believable in terms of the filming location, costumes, etc. Great acting from everyone involved, and it was nice that they used a lot of unknown actors that really disappeared into the roles. The music was well done also.

I didn't find that it dragged on at all - I thought the pace was just right, though I guess I wouldn't mind if they make another series! It is likely too violent for children younger than teens. We give it a thumbs up!
