Clear, reasonable, understandable, devout—all things and more can be honestly said about this generation’s greatest single-author pastoral commentary set. The MacArthur New Testament Commentary series is a help to Christians and preachers. Forged in the study, fired in the pulpit, these comments on the whole New Testament are a gift from one who loves Christ, given to Christ’s bride, the church.
-Mark Denver, pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, D.C.
Dr. MacArthur’s love for the Scripture and his many years of diligent study have resulted in a resource that is a great gift to the Body of Christ. I have found this tool to be a great help as I study the Word and teach it to women. I often refer to this set of commentaries to enhance my understanding of the text and to shed light on difficult passages and questions.
-Nancy Leigh DeMoss, author, Revive our Hearts radio teacher
John MacArthur has provided a compelling example of pastoral ministry based on the Word of God. Now the fruit of that ministry is available to us all: careful attention to the text of Scripture and faithful theological exposition, all in the service of the church of Jesus Christ. Both pastor and layperson will benefit for years to come from this unique commentary series.
-C.J. Mahaney, president of Sovereign Grace Ministries
The MacArthur New Testament Commentary is nothing less than a library of faithful exegesis and exposition. This project is unparalleled in our times, and John MacArthur has produced a masterful commentary series that demands attention and deserves a place in every preacher’s library.

From the Inside Flap
Truth and love are recurring themes throughout John's three epistles. As those changed by God, genuine believers will characteristically love the truth and exhibit true love for others. John's fiery passion for truth is coupled with his gentle compassion for his readers, giving these letters a pastoral quality that is both personal and profound.
Join John MacArthur as he explains each verse in a way that is both doctrinally precise and intensely practical.
The MacArthur New Testament Commentary series comes from the experience, wisdom, and insight of one of the most trusted ministry leaders and Bible scholars of our day. Each volume was written to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible, dealing thoroughly with every key phrase and word in the Scripture without being unnecessarily technical. This commentary will help to give a better, fuller, richer understanding of God's Word, while challenging the reader to a vibrant personal spiritual walk.

Still, you will soon see that I hold John MacArthur's feet to the fire, because his exegesis of First John is so theologically driven he stops listening to the words of Scripture. And while i would agree with much of his theology, some of what he says here just is not to be derived from First John... not at least how he expounds in these key passages below. (If you would like to do some more detailed critique of these topics by a reformed theologian, I would refer you to Michael Horton FROM Westminster Theological Seminary.)
I really enjoyed how John MacArthur ably lists many similarities of First John and John's Gospel account, supporting the same author was at work. This strong foundation builds a case for the unity of thought through-out. Numerous cultural and historical details are waiting for the reader of this commentary. It is easy to read and understand.
It is probably quite well known that John MacArthur holds to the view that Jesus Christ's saving work on the cross is for the elect only...that the atonement is limited to something less than the whole world. This causes him problems and so in First John 2, he argues that, "the whole world" in 1 John 2:2 (we have an Advocate in Him, ... not only us, but for the whole world") is not really for the whole world. He writes that the whole world is"a generic expression that refers to humanity throughout the earth but not necessarily to every individual" (p. 49).Read more ›
Dr. John MacArthur has been pastor of Grace Community Church in Los Angeles since 1969. During that time, he has preached verse-by-verse through the entire New Testament. The commentary chapter divisions are (essentially) derived from those individual sermons.
The essence of John MacArthur's credibility is his unswerving devotion to the Divine inspiration (authorship), absolute inerrancy, and complete authority of the Bible. Since the Bible is the true and infallible written revelation of God to mankind, Dr. MacArthur has said: "The only logical response to inerrant Scripture is to preach it expositionally. By that, I mean preaching in such a way that the meaning of the Bible passage is presented entirely and exactly as it was intended by God." This commitment results in content that is consistently and faithfully evangelical, because, as he explains: "Over the years of teaching the word of God without a lot of presuppositions, I tend to conclude whatever I believe the exegetical process yields."
But, although MacArthur has successfully disentangled himself from the straightjacket of agenda-driven or tradition-mandated, outcome-based theology--paying no tribute to conformity with any human opinion--he is by no means a doctrinal libertine. He is manifestly committed to declaring "the whole purpose of God" (Acts 20:27), and yet equally determined "not to exceed what is written" (2 Corinthians 4:6).Read more ›
