This baby looks good coming out of the box. Small and sleek. The included USB cable is very short, maybe 12 inches. Plugged it into my desktop, turned the PC on and a small LED indicator lights up to let you know you've achieved power. I'm running Windows 10. I expected to see the HD pop up on my desk top screen but it didn't. I found the HD easily enough, and clicked on the installation file. It took a few minutes but installation went smoothly. I then clicked on the "Backup Now" button.
Since this was the first backup, it was still running when I left the office a few hours later. Hopefully in the future it will only backup any new or modified files like Time Machine on my iMac at home, but per a recent review indicates that might not be the case. The default setting is to backup every hour. If it does a full backup every hour then this thing will be running all day. In any case, I plan to set it to backup once or twice a week.
Of course, the true measure of a backup HD is how long it lasts and whether you really can retrieve your files if needed. I hope it lasts the life of my computer. Historically I get a new one about every six years. And I hope to never to have to use it to retrieve my files.
Edit: Having returned to the office this morning, I see that the unit is now just backing up new and modified files, as I had hoped, on the hourly setting.
This drive comes formatted for Windows out of the box with the NTFS file system. I have a MacBook Air and several windows desktops... The Mac reads and writes with some Unix tweaking and of course there are no issues with Windows 7 or 10. I did reformat to the ExFat system which seems to work fine. The drive is very fast with USB 3.0 but works with USB 2 as well. It is powered by the USB port.
My primary use is to store digital photos and video. I then back it up to my 3TB drive. When I travel I take this drive with me. Very portable!
The drive is made of glossy black plastic. It seems sturdy with no creaking or flexing. The USB 3.0 connector is short but sufficient for use with a laptop. If you will be using this with a tower and may be too short to reach rear USB ports.
I'll update this review if anything changes.
I am happy with the read and write speed, I was able to move ~200 GB of video files from my old external drive to this one in less than an hour using my laptop. And it is able to stream HD video without interruption. Overall I would recommend this as a good hard drive for anyone on a budget.
WD used to be a good brand but they've gone down hill lately. This is the second WD drive to die on me recently, both within hours of installation.
