The packaging was both minimal and effective. Upon opening the box, I found the computer, various cables, and the envelope with the setup guide and software. I installed extra RAM, which was easy enough to perform and the included instructions had a section dedicated to doing just that.
There was no OS included (by design), which was fine by me. I toyed with the idea of installing xbmc as an OS, but decided to go with Windows 7 due to Blu-Ray support. Since W7 did all I needed it to, dual-booting wasn't necessary for me. Setting up Windows 7 was easy, though I needed to use the included driver disc to get HDMI output to a full 1920x1080. I am primarily using xbmc on this machine, but have WMC set up for Hulu and integration with PowerDVD. One negative of the setup is that PowerDVD came as part of a suite, the rest of which I found useless. I didn't see an option to install *just* the software I wanted. On the plus side, PowerDVD is one of the few software packages I have ever seen that decodes and overlays closed captioning on the HDMI signal. That is a major plus for me and I commend them for selecting this software as opposed to TotalMediaTheatre or another package.
One quirk of the hardware is that all of the ports are upside-down. It is not a negative, but a curiousity nonetheless. Another is that there is only one USB port in the back. I would have preferred more back there.Read more ›
If fan noise is a concern, look elsewhere.
Also, I was able to bitstream (DTS-MA Dolby True HD) via HDMI with my blu-ray rips which is the whole reason why I bought this awesome unit in the first place. I am using ffdshow and mpc-hc to successfully bitstream high res audio. Like lots of folks out there, I never paid attention to the audio side of the HD movie watching experience. With DTS-MA or True HD audio, the sound quality increases 1000 times than the crappy AC3 or DTS core sound that I used to think was awesome.
Playing full HD 1080p ripped content like Avatar m2ts and MKVs and the video is just stunning with very low CPU usage. Haven't played with Flash contents yet but who cares. Say goodbye to your Intel Atom boxes as non of them can bitstream.
The five stars are for the product, because I like it. I am not reducing the stars on the product for the seller experience, but I am going to include the seller experience because I feel that you should be warned.
As you may have noticed, there are two sellers for this product currently. Amazon and SabrePC. SabrePC's offer is, at present, $175.73 (not counting shipping) cheaper than Amazon's. So I decided to purchase it. It arrived, and I found out that it was not what I ordered. As I stated earlier, I got the Barebones, not the PLUS. I didn't mind. I already had RAM coming, so I just got a new, more spacious hard drive as well.
These things cost money.
Well, SabrePC sells a lot of things. Among them is the Barebones version of this item. I looked up how much it cost and perceived that it was EXACTLY $70 cheaper than the PLUS version (again, not factoring in shipping). To clarify:
ZBOX AD03 PLUS: $269.99
ZBOX AD03 Barebones: $199.99
Difference between the two:$ 70.99
In the midst of all this, I foolishly wrote up a seller review on SabrePC. I have not found a way to edit that, which is why this is part of my review of this product.
So I contacted SabrePC AFTER writing my review, explained my situation and waited. They replied pretty quickly, and told me I could either have a $50 refund or have the hard drive and RAM that were supposed to be in the ZBOX.Read more ›
