I couldn't put this book down. As a retired firefighter, one always wonders if other firefighters thought the same concerning past situations they encountered. I kept saying "yes" to each chapter the author described. This book should be required reading for any new applicant considering the fire service. It is hard to find "true" descriptions of events which enable one to consider certain careers. This book gives an individual a good insight as to what the fire service was like in the 70's-90's.

I read Richard Ornberg's chronicle of his firefighting/medic career with great interest because he and I entered the profession at the same point in history, when the old fire service began to move into the service we know today. 10-24 is filled with the action, some of it grim, that all firefighters and medics know and deal with every day on the job. But the gallows humor is there, also, the psychological survival humor firefighters need avoid PTSD. And Ornberg is a writer, was a writer when he served, so he knows how to put a story together with well selected details. So a narrative thread runs through all the essays pulled together in 10-24, a narrative of changes in the fire service, a narrative of political battles the fire service always has to wage to hold off the forces of nullification from misguided politicians, and the narrative of service. Public service at its finest. Highly recommended reading.

I've never served as a fire fighter, but I found this book extremely interesting and an enjoyable read. I have often wondered how ER personnel deal with the dangerous and sometimes gruesome situations they are thrust into on a daily basis. The accounts detailed are very descriptive and well written. Although a couple chapters have parts that are not for the faint of heart, they are described with compassion, as well as realism.

But this book isn't a compilation of tragic events, but a first person account of the experience of a fire fighter from rookie to retirement. It chronicles the many changes and improvements that evolved in the firehouse over the years, as the rest of society evolved as well. There are many humorous stories and anecdotes that really add to the enjoyment of the book.

I highly recommend this as an entertaining as well as informative read into a life that most of us don't experience. An excellent book, it has increased my appreciation for these and all civil servants, whose service is so easy to take for granted.

An Action, adventure thriller, with a touch of drama - that is this true story book. Its overall format is similar to a documentary, but due to its first person nature, it plays like a movie in the readers mind.

It is gripping, and you will find yourself on the edge of your seat, almost feeling the heat and witnessing the events thanks to how highly detailed the author, Richard Ornberg, is. It will make you laugh, but can make you cry, and the experiences shared have something for rookie and veteran alike.

Its awe-inspiring accounts not only reveal the firefighters experiences, psychology and politics, but encompasses historical events and insight into true "once in a lifetime" opportunities.

I recommend it to firefighters, journalist, students or anyone interested in the Topic, wishing to be informed or desiring a great true story.

Thank You for writing this book and keep up the good work!

This was a well written fact-filled book on suburban firefighting. Lots of very informative details about the evolution of equipment and procedures during his twenty six year career with Des Plains FD. It gave you a look at suburban firefighting instead of the usual city or urban settings. Well done !
