5 out of 5 stars
The story 10 Dates: A fun and sexy romantic comedy novel by Emily James is a humorous romance book. Joanie Fox’s best friend begins an intervention when Joanie’s engagement to her current boyfriend goes south. It involves 10 Dates in 10 Days. What a concept! The thinking is that there has to be one that is not too bad. What happens next had me laughing so hard that I almost fell off my couch while holding my side. Will this approach work for Joanie? Will she finally find her true love?
This is the first book I have read by the author and I have to say she has created a book that I am sure to read over and over. It is just too good not to. Not only is the laugh factor above a 10, it also gives me a good reason to turn down the next blind date that my best friend sets me up on. Most of the dates that Joanie ends up on are so over the top. Let’s just say that I will not be going on a date on the internet, ever. I really felt for Joanie as she is trying to find someone however it just doesn’t seem that the dates her best friend sets her up on are working. I love Joanie’s character. She is a sassy woman who seems to not be able to find Mr. Right. She doesn’t seem to have a lot of confidence in herself in regards to relationships and believes that she will grow old alone. I also found a lot of humor in her interactions with her neighbors. The bantering back and forth between Joanie and her friends shows their deep friendship and is another reason that this book had me laughing so hard. Read this book to find out if Joanie finally finds her HEA! This book does have some mature themes and sexual content. It would be recommended for those 18 years of age or older.

Review: What can I say about 10 Dates other than it is absolute written perfection! I loved the opening non-engagement scene as it really sets the tone for Joanie and Chris’ relationship later on and sets the stage for all the events that come later. I felt this was the perfect spot to start, even though it the end of Joan and Chris’ relationship we get enough exposition and backstory threaded throughout the novel to not need any additional information. It also sets up the friendship between Joan, Melinda and Mickey very well and how vital they will be to Joanie’s development as a character.
I loved everything about this novel but the thing that really hooked me was the relationships. The relationship between Joan and Chris is believable although it does make Joan seem extremely naïve in the beginning. Joan’s relationship with Six is amazing from the shouting matches to the flirty banter I was so invested in this relationship I couldn’t wait for them to get together and was shouting at them at one point to just shut it and kiss. The secondary characters’ relationships aren’t really presented as the first proper insight we get into Melinda’s marriage is at the divorce stage and I personally wanted a little more here so the divorce and cheating reveals held a little bit more weight. Also as I mentioned previously I would have liked to have meet Chef a little earlier with maybe a scene where Mickey cooks dinner like in the epilogue but has a major freak out where Joanie comforts him and he confesses his true feelings for Chef.
Another amazing thing about 10 dates was the dialogue between the characters from the flirtatious banter between Joan and Six throughout the novel. The character’s dialogue is brilliant especially with witty banter and retorts that add to the personality of each character. The dialogue is never overly narrative and I believe this is because of Joan’s perspective and her internal thoughts and feelings definitely break up the larger chunks of dialogue making it a lot easier to read and process. I did find that Joan’s voice was the only one that was completely consistent as she seems very naïve and young initially with her becoming more feisty and mature feeling as the novel progresses but apart from that everyone’s voices were consistent and extremely distinct, we know exactly who is talking with needing to be told because of their unique voices and speech patterns.
My least favorite character was Chris because, in one word, douche. My favorite character has to be Six, his flirtatious banter, snarky retort and overall personality make it near impossible not to love him. I didn’t like the fact Joan comes across so naïve in the first few chapters but it does eventually enhance her transformation into a more confident woman by the end of the novel.
Some people may view the plot as cliché but it was a very unique perspective on an overused genre. I found the references and style of the novel to be very current and extremely relatable. I highly recommend this book to all especially if you are a fan of contemporary romance novels. I loved everything about Emily James’ writing and the whole package she created within 10 dates and I hope she will be writing something like this very soon in the future.
I absolutely LOVED this book! I zipped right through it because it was so good I could hardly put it down! This is my one of my favorite type of books to read. I love all the humor and tom foolery going on in this story. I sit reading this with either a smirk, a smile or laughing with some snorting mixed in. How much more enjoyable can a book get? Ok add in a some hot bodies and messing around and then it's a fantastic book....wait that IS this book! Speaking of messing around the kisses that "Six" lays on "Four" are deliciously yummy.
This story really takes off once she meets her hot neighbor with delicious looking abs of steel or poster-perfect body(as she later describes him). They start off by calling each other by their apartment names when he tries to deliver a lost shoe he found after she tried to climb in through the window since the foyer door was stuck. I laughed at this great beginning. After embarrassing herself a couple times in front of "Six" ( sexy as sin neighbor) Joanie (also known as Four) now makes a thorough check of the hallway via the peephole to make sure he isn't lurking waiting to tease her about their latest encounter. She feels like a peeping Tom and she swears he knows she's looking at him through the hole. But he couldn't right?
Her best friends Mikey and Melinda are a hoot! Melinda is bound determined to get them both with a man in 10 days of dating 10 men. Poor Mikey gets stuck with cooking classes while Joanie dates 10 men. Not only are her dates one crazy nightmare after another. Her neighbor Six is getting more on her nerves with all the stunts he pulls just to annoy her along with picking on her about her dates. Who needs a hunky man telling her what to do? Not Joanie! That's who!
I'm so so glad that there is going to be another book by this author. This book was perfect and I can not wait for more craziness in the next one!
Look Out Melinda! They are coming for you!

It’s Big-Tits-Twenty. I recognise her sickly, purring voice, even though I can’t quite see her yet. She sounds like a room full of tortured cats.Read more
