EDIT 2015-04-12: I've been using this daily for 9 months. Never had a tie slip off, haven't damaged a single tie (I have a variety of thicknesses and materials from thick wool to fine silk), and it's still fast and easy to use. Looks as good as the day it showed up too; I'm hoping it will late the rest of my tie-wearing career!
My recommendation is for either the walnut rack on swivel hook or this walnut rack shaped like a shirt hanger, depending on your needs.
The Twirl-a-Tie is just a gimmick. Made of ugly plastic, its hooks are not spaced far enough apart, so you can use only every other hook or mash your ties together. Even using only every other hook, the ties are still crushed between the hooks at the inside. I would buy the Twirl-a-Tie only if I knew a small boy who owned some ties and wanted a hanger. It is too bulky to be used for travel.
The walnut tie rack on swivel hook is sturdy and decent-looking, although not something to show off. It will accept 22 ties on its 22 hooks, which are sized and spaced adequately. It is easy to get the ties on and off the hooks, and the hooks are long enough to hang belts on the end in addition to the ties. Drawbacks: (1) it does not swivel easily and must be removed from the closet to pick a tie; (2) it is wide and the hooks push into the clothes on either side; (3) it is long and your ties may dangle onto things if the floor of your closet is stacked high.Read more ›
This hanger lets you see all the ties from the top or sides and you can easily get the one you want. The clips are too tight when you receive it but you can open them up with a screwdriver/butter knife (see pictures). They measure about 2.5" when its folded and about 5.5" when it's opened. One thing to note is that if you only have a few ties make sure you put some ties on one side and the others on the other side to balance it out or you fill all the slots turn the sides in opposite directions. Also, the ones I received had some markings on the wood but I didn't mind that.
I really recommend these hangers, you might have to adjust the clip to fit your ties but it's no big deal. I uploaded some pictures to help you decide.
Point one: The swivel slots for the ties or belts work great. They are a little snug when first moving them, but don't fight you that bad. One of the reasons I gave it 3 stars (I say 3 1/2 but that isn't an option) is the tie clips. They are VERY snug when inserting your ties. I was worried the ties may be damaged at first. This type of device shouldn't hold it tight as if a shipping company is going to be throwing it in piles, in trucks, and in airplanes. No reason to make it very hard to get in and out.
Point two. The main hanger hook, on mine anyway, does NOT swivel. When trying to find the tie or belt you think fits best, you can't rotate the hook and hang it on a shelf to look at your inventory. A lot of the reviews stated it had a swivel hook. Either mine doesn't, or it is the one that has a defective hook. This point doesn't bother me nearly as much. So what. I shove the shirts aside and figure it out.
Otherwise, it's a great way to save space for those of us with a collection of ties or handkerchiefs and not a ton of space.
