Simple and accessible history of cinema and its major developments; invaluable as a teaching tool but a bloody good read too.

I am a huge film geek and loved reading through this. Everyone who has picked up my copy ends up spending quite a bit of time flipping through it.

This compilation is entertaining and informative, and provides a nice overview of some of the main topics studied by film school students. Lavishly illustrated with photographs and stills from hundreds of films, Parkinson's book democratically covers a wide variety of genres, time periods, and nationalities in discussing the development of the film world's tropes and practices. This is both its strong point and its greatest weakness, because in his effort to be inclusive, Parkinson loses the reader's attention with long lists of foreign-language filmmakers and films that very few American readers will have heard of. Still, this is a fun book to own, and since each chapter is less than two pages long, it definitely fills the need for an interesting bed-time or bathroom read.
