About the Author

Michael Ochs developed an addiction to rock and roll in the early fifties. To feed his habit, Ochs headed the publicity departments of Columbia, Shelter, and ABC Records in the 60s and 70s. He has also been a disc jockey, taught a rock-history course for UCLA and written for such magazines as Rock, Melody Maker, Cashbox, and Crawdaddy. Michael Ochs established the Michael Ochs Archives in the mid-70s. The archives currently house millions of photographs and over 100,000 albums and singles.

More like 800 Record Covers

Note that the 2014 Taschen hardcover of 1000 Record Covers does not contain pictures of 1000 record covers - the actual number of covers pictured is closer to 800.

I also own the 1996 softcover copy of 1000 Record Covers - and that one does contain approx. 1000 covers. For some reason, the 2014 hardcover eliminates the entire section of 1950's covers- nearly 160 pages containing 220 photographs. Of all the decades presented, the 1950's was my favorite, perhaps because so many of the covers were unfamiliar to me.

I loved the 1996 softcover version, and decided to upgrade to a hardcover version - only to learn that nearly a quarter of the content had now been eliminated.

Bought this as a gift for a musician. Think it's a neat idea; hope they like it. (The book is sealed in plastic, so I cannot comment on the inside pages; I am hoping they are awesome.) Slightly disappointed in the size. Please note that this is not a large book. This was mostly my own mistake, but, some of the reviews called it a "coffee table book" and, looking at the photo of the cover, it is easy to assume that the height of the book is the size of an album. The actual size of the book, which is the size of a typical hardback (about 8" tall), is absolutely noted correctly in the description -- I'm just mentioning in case anyone else makes the same mistake I did. I am also less than thrilled that I bought it for $18 two days ago, and now it is on sale for $9.99. My luck. haha

If you're like me (Boomer), it's a veritable trip down memory lane, full of fondly remembered album covers and others temporarily forgotten. Would make a great gift, too, for people who didn't live through the era in which the LP cover was a deliberate art form unto itself. The good price makes 1000 RECORD COVERS more attractive yet.

Yet another super book to add to my collection of books on record covers (it might be even better if I had some actual album covers still) and what an interesting bunch of albums from the well known to the pretty obscure. Super useful to use combined with Alexa Music which seems to have many of them, though the older ones it does get a little confused by at times and try the usual 'I have a radio station that may interest you'. The book has a thousand covers and I am certain they could bring out loads of similar ones such as '1000 Folk albums' or '1000 Disco albums' ... I would buy them !
