Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Stiteler has created an amusing and informative collection of advice and facts for bird lovers in this highly browsable and entertaining book. Birders everywhere love to not only “know stuff” but to be able to trot it out as needed, and Stiteler’s book is full of such “stuff.” Dividing the book into 10 chapters, the author groups her factoids by such topics as feeding birds, migration, bird love, and baby birds, but also allows her to answer common questions, explore why birding is hip, and follow the bird watching year. We learn how birds mate (quantity is the key word), the ten signs that you may need to cut back on bird feeding (neighbors refer to you as “bird lady”), why birds attack windows (they are trying to drive off a rival - their reflection), and the definitions of birding terms (a “lifer” is a new species to be added to your life list). Filling the text with myth-busting corrections, color photos illustrating topics, and ending each chapter with vacation ideas, Stiteler has created a wonderful potpourri for birdwatchers at all levels. --Nancy Bent

Review

Richard Crossley
“Birds, Booze or Blogs, Sharon is definitely the Queen ‘B.’”

Jeffrey A. Gordon, President American Birding Association
“The world of birds and birders is fun, fascinating, and at times more than a little bit funky. Sharon Stiteler makes an ideal tour guide through this strange and fascinating territory, sharing facts, opinions, stories, and yes, secrets, in an entertaining, personal, and personable way.”

Publishers Weekly

“[A] delightful exploration of the habits of birds and spot-on ideas for maximizing backyard experience with them. Replete with color photos, sidebars, and bullet points, this handy guide enlightens the reader on everything from nesting habits through bird "fidelity" to beaks…If you're already avian-adept, this book will prove a lively romp; if you, like many others, are still figuring it out, the book will help raise your game and increase your happiness quotient.”

Library Journal

“Stiteler infuses her subject with an enthusiasm that is truly infectious. For readers new to birding, this is the book; its “ew!” factor might even pull in some young adults. No doubt many of the experts Birdchick has entertained at events around the continent will also want to experience her wit in print form.”

BirdWatching, “Books for Birdwatchers”

“If you’ve ever read Sharon Stiteler’s blog, you know that she’s smart as a whip, loves birds, and likes to laugh—all qualities that shine in her new book of tips and trivia.”

10000birds.com

“A fun way to teach people about birds and bird feeding, very much as Sharon does here and on her blog, but on paper, with a table of contents, a glossary, features like “Bird Busting!” and a lovely, colorful design.”

Birds & Blooms, “Books We Love”

“The can’t miss bird book this spring.”

Library Journal

“Stiteler infuses her subject with an enthusiasm that is truly infectious. For readers new to birding, this is the book; its “ew!” factor might even pull in some young adults. This book got a lot of good reviews so I got it for my sister. She has a lot of bird activity in her back yard but sometimes has trouble identifying the birds. I thought this might help. I've only paged through it once and it as not as straight-forward as I thought it would be but I'm sure it will be fine after she uses it for a while.

Lots of info for backyard birders and beginners alike! Lots of knowledge packed into this wonderful book! Couldn't put it down...a must-read for anyone who loves birds. I used to love feeding "my birds" when I had a home with a yard...now that I am in a condo, I no longer can do this, but I still admire my feathered friends! Thanks to Sharon for a wonderful book!

This is not The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior and that can be a good thing. It is amusing and therefore can open up birding to those who have been held back by various presuppositions (true and untrue). Also, the author poses all sorts of "stupid questions" and answers them nicely (so you don't have to pose those questions or feel stupid). There is room on your bookshelf for both this book of secrets and the more weighty guide to Bird Life and Behavior.

A well-intentioned friend thought I would enjoy reading 1001 Secrets Every Birder Should Know. Knowing nothing more than its title, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the author is none other than "Birdchick," whose interesting blog I earmarked long ago. She knows her stuff, and this birding book reflects that. It's a smattering of interesting topics and fun trivia, sure to interest any birder, from novice to expert. The book can be read in whatever order you like and because each snippet of information is brief, it's well-suited for quick reads while eating lunch, waiting for an appointment, vacationing, bedtime, etc.

I wonder where Ms. Stiteler gleaned all those little-known bird facts and tips. So many I never knew, and I have oodles of bird field guides and educational texts. When I'm out and about, there is always that one birder among the crowd who is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. People gather around for bird identifications and to learn whatever else they can from them. I'm confident Sharon Stiteler is one of those magnets when she is birding outdoors, and hooray, she shares what she knows in this very diverse book.

I got into birds just a couple of years ago so there was a lot of stuff in this book that I didn't know. I'm going to pick one up for a friend for xmas who also loves birds. This is a must have for anyone who enjoys bird watching. I've looked at and own a lot of birding books, but this one is fun and easy. Check it out.

Every day answers to bird questions and behavior. Easy reference. Enjoyed looking up answers to questions I had and have been asked. I'm a professional but we don't always know all the answers. It's refreshing to have our brain cells stimulated with questions from amateurs that ask questions or observe behavior we have taken for normal.

Breezy and poorly-edited, this listicle-turned-book may serve well to get novices interested in birding, but anyone willing to make a trek into the field to pursue a bird will quickly tire of truly trivial bullet points. Perhaps with more attentive editing I could be persuaded to keep this on an end table for occasional perusal; for now, however, I am glad to have borrowed this title from my local library and saved my money for better optics.
