Now, some background: I live in Las Vegas, NV and it gets up to 115 during the summer, and the garage gets hot when my wife’s van parks in there after work, so MAYBE these straps can’t handle heat and fail after some time due to heat exposure.
The designs and function of this unit is fine, I just think the materials could be better. I thought the straps seemed “heavy-duty” enough for the task, but I guess I (and the manufacturer) were wrong. I would have put money on the pulley system or the pull rope failing before the straps would... man I would have lost that bet!
I’m sure if you use this in a less hot climate, it would be fine, but please DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE UNDER YOUR KAYAK... just to be safe. I understand this is the purpose of this unit, but thank god ther was no vehicle or especially a person under it when it failed.
Good luck and use at your own risk.

I installed two of these to hoist a pair of Hobie Mirage Compass Kayaks (80 lbs).
This is an economical system that can be upgraded to be quite acceptable.
As a blue water sailor, I take rigging seriously.
My suggestions:
Bypass the “brake”. It will only chafe the line and give a false sense of security.
Replace the oversized sharp edged cleats with proper rope cleats.
Replace the cheap rope with 5/16” solid braid line.
Add turning pulleys on the ceiling just beyond the bow (or stern) to make a straight downward line of pull on the rope. As is, pulling from an angle off the side of the kayak will just mean early failure of the rope or pulley.
Add safety lines at bow and stern. Eye hooks in rafters with paracord clipped to bow and stern at storage height just in case something fails.
Then we tried a second time and that hoist rope broke again and the kayak once again hit the concrete solid.
What a disappointing waste of time, completely worthless! Now here’s the problem they require it to be returned within 30 days, but since this is my rental property and I had to work to get this done before catching a flight I didn’t have time to pack it up and send back so now I’m now I’m not only going to lose the money, the Kayak is not lifted and sitting on the ground in my garage and my “project” trip was wasted and my Kayak is damaged.
The pulleys seem fine but untested, but useless without functioning ropes! Maybe wheels on pulleys need to be larger too.

I followed the advice of other reviewers and did not use the 2.5 inch lag bolts provided, subbing for 3.5 inch lags.
The units were easy to install, and lift my kayaks up very well. I placed the brackets perhaps too far apart for a 10 ft kayak, and so use bungees to hold the straps in non-slip position. I might redo the brackets and make them closer, but it all works fine. I would recommend this product.
I secured boat at both ends with extra rope for extra insurance. You don't want the ropes to slip!!
