    Great PC. Great price.
    I have been told by many friends that netbooks are bad and that the performance is terrible. I have no clue what they are talking about, ive been spoiled with a nice 2.0ghz dual core, Intel Pentium on my laptop, so this does seem a bit slow, but it is still a great computer for the price.The page does not feature very many specific specs about it such as graphics card and stuff, very annoying.The hard drive is split into two 80gb drives, worth mentioning since the page doesnt.In order to get 10.5 hours battery, it has to be completely uncomfortably dim, no wifi, bluetooth, camera, set not to turn off screen/sleep/hibernate, and with absolutely no motion on the screen. This is near pointless since you wouldnt be using the computer. I would say with moderate usability it gets 8 hours easy.The delivery date estimate was wrong so it ended up spending the night in the mailbox, had to wait for it to thaw, lol.Several months into use, i plugged in my charger. A loud pop and a puff of smoke exited the computer with the distinct, burning electronics smell. Everything seemed to be working fine except the charging port. I turned off the computer and took out the battery, waited about 5 minutes, turned it on, and tested everything. Everything still worked fine except the charging port. I called customer support to obtain an RMA to send it in for repair. She immediately accused the charger of overheating. It had been plugged in only seconds before this and had rested for over an hour. Plus, the smoke came from the computer, not the charger. I explained the situation and she agreed to have me send it in, but said it probably wouldnt be covered by warranty.I have not sent it in, this happened only a couple hours ago. I have tried letting all components rest for a while but have had no luck. I am currently backing up files using the remaining battery life. If you smell close to the vent, you can still smell the burnt electronic system.The point to this addition: customer service is very uneducated and the warranty is useless. They are easy to understand though, unlike most companies who outsource to companies thousands of kilometers away.

    The Asus Eee PC 1005 HA-P is the best available netbook right now. Why? Read on. I have had many mini-computers, from the original Poquet PC to the Zeos Contenda, and most recently the Dell 700m. When I recently started looking into purchasing a netbook, I was impressed with the battery life of the Asus Eee PC 1000HE. However, since I do a lot of word processing, the keyboard and the touchpad buttons were a real concern. When I found out about the Dell Mini 10v coming out, I ordered one with upgrades to a six cell battery and larger hard drive. To make a long story short, the track pad buttons (inside the track pad, no less) are a nightmare and the battery protruding on the bottom is an ugly compromise. Add the high running temperature to the poorer than expected battery life, and the Dell went back.

    Then Amazon posted a note on the 1000HE description that a replacement computer was coming with a link to a page for the 1005HA-P. The 1008HA was not a consideration because of the non-removable battery and significantly shorter battery life. I received the 1005HA-P on July 2. The form factor of the 1005HA as a clam shell works quite well for me. While the shiny black case is beautiful it does pick up fingerprints; however, a quick wipe with a soft cloth takes care of it. I like the solid feel and the soft protective sleeve that comes with it. The ways the screen opens (down and behind the netbook) enables a smaller footprint when the case is closed, although it limits how far back the screen will tilt. The keyboard has a responsive feel and the larger keys (than the 1000HE or my Dell 700m) along with the oversize right shift key are a real plus. Word processing is smooth and fast. I especially like the button in the upper left that disables the track pad - quite helpful to avoid unintended cursor movement. The smaller arrow keys on the bottom right are a reasonable compromise, and I like the track pad with the raised dots (unlike some other reviewers).

    The Wi-Fi range was better on the Dell but acceptable on the Asus. I definitely have not experienced the problems another reviewer mentioned about the Wi-Fi. I have used it on many different routers with no problem. It runs MS Office 2007 without a hitch. Surfing the net is a breeze, but I did have one "blue screen of death" when dealing with one demanding internet site. I have experienced no other serious problems in the month since I have had it.

    Battery life? I would say it is not all that far from the advertised 10+ hours, depending on your settings. The Atom 280 processor seems faster than my Dell 700m or Mini 10v (although this is purely subjective), and I do plan to upgrade the memory to 2 gigs, thankfully quite easy with the small removable door on the bottom. The bottom of the computer does get a little warm after long use, but nothing like the heat of the Dell Mini. I have not experienced the problems with the battery charger mentioned by other reviewers either. It charges quickly and shuts off when finished. I have hooked it up to a portable DVD drive and it loaded programs with no problem.

    Over all, this computer is all that I was looking for in a netbook. The light weight, the battery life, the keyboard, the non-protruding removable battery, the bright screen, the track pad disable button and general ease of use makes it hard to beat. I find it extremely satisfying to use. Yes, I did have an airplane trip in the last couple of days, and was thankful for the small size when the person in front of me reclined their seat back all the way for the whole flight. I could not have continued using a larger laptop. Taking the machine through airport security is so much easier than doing the same with a full size notebook or even the 700m.

    For those who are looking for a netbook for general use and internet surfing I don't believe you can find a better one out there.

    Addendum: After six months using this netbook, I still find it meets my needs quite well. I did install the extra memory and the 2 gigs does seem to make it run a bit faster, but it is less of a difference than I anticipated. Battery life continues to hold up and the keyboard is a true godsend with its full size keys. I notice Consumer Reports rated the computer very high as well. The only downside I have discovered is the track pad. It can a be bit quirky depending on how you adjust the settings. I recommend minimizing the size of the scroll zones on the right and bottom, other wise you find the screen suddenly scrolling when you did not want it to do so. Also the pinch/expand feature with two fingers can be a mixed blessing. In most cases it does exactly what you want: zoom in or zoom out of a screen (very helpful on the small screen of a netbook), but on occasion it will zoom when you don't want or expect it to because of an inadvertent gesture or touch by a thumb, etc. I disabled it for a while but have re-enabled it because I truly missed the feature of easy zooming. The occasional blue screen of death unfortunately has not gone away; Microsoft attributes it to an errant driver, but I have not been able to isolate what driver is the cause. I would still give this ASUS 5 stars, but of course the market continues to come out with new models all the time. I have heard mixed reviews of the Windows 7 starter edition that comes with some models, so I would recommend sticking with good old XP. XP SP3 works quite well on this computer, so why mess with what works?

    I bought the 1005-HA-P just before the start of a European vacation, and it arrived in the time specified, thanks to Amazon shipping. The computer worked correctly out of the box and it's a pretty nice looking unit. Very nice, in fact, though I strongly dislike glossy screens - no matter, I knew it would have one when I ordered it. My reasons for choosing this model were:
    * Battery Life
    * N280 Processor
    * BlueTooth
    * Webcam and array microphones
    * Wireless N
    * High ratings
    * Reliable brand
    * Light weight and small size
    * Reports of good behavior with Windows 7

    Results:
    *The battery life has been very good, especially if you follow the rule of turning off the wireless and bluetooth, and turning down the screen brightness. This isn't a hassle, and usually when you want extended battery life, you're on a plane where you don't need full brightness or radio anyway. Controls for these functions are right on the keyboard.
    * I was a little concerned about the processor, as it's a big step backward from the dual cores that are standards nowadays, but it's worked surprisingly well for my needs. Only weakness is in the ability to playback and edit videos from my Flip. This isn't a big problem, and it's a fair trade-off for the portability. Photo editing with 6 megapixel images, using Picasa 3, worked quite well.
    * I cannot comment on the Bluetooth capabilities - I haven't used them yet.
    * The webcam and microphone array work very well. One of the first things I did was to have a Skype call with a friend overseas and this little computer worked much better than my Lenovo T61 or my HP media box.
    * The Wireless performance is great. It works flawlessly with my Linksys G router, and it worked correctly in the UK, France, and Italy.
    * High ratings - These are justified in my case. I know some have had problems with these computers, but I took a chance based on the majority of happy owners, and I'm now one of them. I haven't had any problems with the AC adaptor, even using it in various countries - always worked fine.
    * Reliable brand - See previous comment. BTW, I priced this exact same model in Taiwan, where they're made, and it costs about 40% more there! Overall, the fit and finish are great, and it seems to be pretty sturdy. I toted this thing everywhere and ever roughed it up a bit - no problems.
    * Light weight and small size - This was highly important during my travels. Many times I was glad that I'd bought this thing rather than toting the Lenovo laptop around. Such much lighter and smaller, and compared to the Lenovo, its battery is immortal.
    * Reports of good behavior with Windows 7 - My experience has been great so far. XP worked alright, but W7 works even better. Installation wasn't too painful. I didn't want to buy an external drive for this Asus, so I set up by HP media computer and this one with the same workgroup name, then shared the DVD drive on the HP, and installed W7 on the Asus using the drive on my HP box. Worked great. One thing to mention, I did install the 2GB RAM chip (the 667 MHz one), which went in easily and seems to be working well.

    So, that's it. The Asus is working like a charm as I sit on my front porch in Sunny California, typing this review. I just need to do something about this @!?# glossy screen! ;-) Must shop for a matte film.
