This Lawn-Boy 20-inch variable speed mower is equipped with a blade override system, known as TimeOut. This feature allows the user to safely step away from the mower momentarily without having to restart the engine upon returning. Weighing only 80 it is lightweight and maneuverable yet powerful enough to cut through tough grass. It is powered by a Kohler 149cc 6-1/2 gross torque over head valve engine that requires no priming and is easy to pull. The 2-bail variable speed self-propel is rear wheel drive making it easier to maneuver on uneven areas. The smaller deck width allows for mowing in tight areas. The deep dome deck design accompanied with the tri-cut blade make for better mulching. Not only can the mower mulch but is also can bag and side discharge. For homeowners seeking a reliable mower that is budget-friendly and back to basics, Lawn-Boy builds on the quality and craftsmanship that made Lawn-Boy a backyard icon. With Lawn-Boy mowers the choice is clear cut. All Lawn-Boy mowers are backed by Lawn-Boy's 2-year full warranty. One pull on the starter gets it going and the governor keeps the engine speed right where it's needed. As soon as you encounter higher grass the engine speed increases.
And the self propelled system works great.
Couldn't have been easier to setup, take it out of box, add oil which is included, and gas and start it up on first pull. It's so easy to pull the cord and it starts right up. The engine has plenty of power but runs smooth and quit. The levers are easy to use and it propels nicely. I was hesitant about buying after reading the ONE review complaining so loudly about how it doesn't have enough power. With the bargain price, and all the features I was worried it really wouldn't have enough power but took the chance anyway and couldn't be happier. My advice would be if you are looking for a self propelled mower to try this one first.
The bag is on the small side. I don't bag my lawn clippings I mulch but if you bag I thought it might be worth mentioning, might have to empty more often than your current mower.
Another thing to mention is that this mower is fairly quiet, as mowers go. I have no problems hearing people talking to me from several feet away. The blade override system is probably the feature I like the most as I do not need to restart the mower every time I walk away from it. Overall, I am very pleased with the features and the build quality of this mower, and have ansolutely no regrets.
The one thing that people may need pointed out to them is that there is no side discharge on this mower. This is not an issue for me as I mulch most of the times, and bag the rest of the times (if grass got too long). However, it may be an issue for some.
Update: I should have read the fine print in the owners manual. This thing will do side discharge, but you have to request the chute which comes free of charge. Seems silly to me, but the option is there.
I also like the extra-large fuel tank filler - Makes it easy to insert one of those goofy CARB-compliant gas can nozzles.
The forward speed is pretty easy to regulate with the lower lever on the handle - Fully depressing it makes the tires do a little "burn out" on a hard surface! At full forward speed, you move briskly. As a safety feature, the forward drive mechanism slips when the mower encounters immovable objects. It also slips on sharp uphill climbs, requiring some help from the operator.
The blade shut-off is a NICE feature - encourages you to stop and retrieve foreign objects, rather than simply "taking a gamble" on running over them.
I'd like to see a fuel shut-off valve, particularly since my mower is stored in a garage - Would hate to find a puddle of gas on the floor if the carb float valve ever leaks!
I couldn't find an oil drain plug on bottom of the mower deck, so I'm tipping the entire mower on its side to drain the oil out of the filler neck - Not an ideal situation. The top-mounted filler neck (complete with dipstick) is a nice touch - Makes it VERY easy to check or add oil.
Overall, it's a very good mower, particularly for the price. I'd definitely buy one again.
