In a nutshell, the camera rocks! In the time I've had it, there have been some small issues (which I'll address shortly), but overall this was a great purchase at a great price. Let's cover the issues:
1. It has incompatability problems with some SD cards: after doing some online searching and experimentation, I eventually settled on a 32G SanDisk card, which has worked perfectly. Do your research, there is a lot of info out there on exactly what card to use.
2. Bad battery:this caused all sorts of issues, like losing setup information, files not saving, etc. I replaced the battery after a couple of months and everything is working perfectly. I would recommend that this is the first thing that anybody does when buying one of these cameras - there are lots of suppliers available. I would expect to change the battery every couple of years anyway, as the unit is exposed to extreme heat stuck on a windscreen all the time (in Africa).
3. When sound was enabled, data was not saved: I suspect this was due to a bad battery. I disabled sound, and everything worked fine. I actually don't need sound, so this was not a big issue for me. I have not checked sound again since I replaced the battery, but I don't think there will be any issues.
4. Suction cup assembly plastics degrade: this is again due to extreme heat conditions. I had to do some repair work with various plastic glues, which extended the life of the part. So far, so good, although I suspect that I'll eventually just use an old Garmin mount for it when it finally dies for good.
So, all in all, good purchase. Finally, on the supplier, Spy Tec - very impressed with their after sales followup. While I specifically had no issues regarding the product at the time, I got the impression that they were very willing to replace if defective. Making sure that I received the product, even though it was expedited through Amazon, was a good call.
The video is pretty clear, although license plates cannot be read all the time especially in rainy weather or at night.
I dislike the suction cup because it stops sticking after a while and keeps falling off the window.
This camera is sensitive to extreme temperatures. I started to take it out of the car after it would freeze when turned on in cold or hot weather. Then resetting would correct the issue. So if you don't mind resetting it all the time, keep a pinhole stick handy.
Now lately the camera is in a spinning cycle of restarting. I changed power cords and formatted the SD card to see if that would fix it - it did not work. I guess it was OK for the price paid.

- Camera bessere Auflösung selbst am Rand
- Micro viel bessere und klarere Aufnahme auch lauter
- Menu Besser übersetzt ( Deutsch )
- Bedienungsanleitung vorhanden saubere Verpackung
The fake ones are in the orange box and record in other formats - those ones are total crap.
For less than $60 Canadian all-in I really didn't expect to receive a camera nearly as impressive as this. My previous dash cam purchases were a disaster, the one over-heated and stopped recording video, and the other one had recording quality so terrible I could have done better filming with a shoe-box...
Enter this camera! The camera itself is very light weight, and although a bit wide, is only a big taller than an inch or two, so it won't distract you while driving. the 140 degree viewing angle allows you to fully see your front fenders in case anyone side swipes you etc. The vertical viewing angle is good enough to see the colour/state of the traffic light (again, helping to prove that you had the light rather than the other guy)
The cable included is long enough to run under the interior trim pieces to allow you to connect the adapter to your 12v plug discretely (or in my case, a 12v splitter under the passenger seat). The suction cup mount is very sturdy, and stays in place once set; the clip that holds the camera onto the mount can be a bit tight and frustrating to remove - it should be considered fixed-in-place. I replaced the suction mount with a $4 rear-view-mirror mount which helps to conceal the camera and gets a better view overall.
Video quality is better than expected, it is technically 1080p, but don't expect to see the next Hollywood blockbuster filmed with it; it's for proving liability and catching licence plate numbers. From my experience, it can record a legible plate number from about 5 car lengths, even if the person is coming towards you, the frame rate and resolution is sufficient to get a clear look at the make, model, plate, and driver.
The night "IR" led is literally a joke, it's a crappy white LED that just reflects off the window and blurs your nighttime recording efforts (it is off by default - even they realized it sucked) Night vision is typically where the sub-$100 cameras will fail; this model produces MUCH better video than other sub $100 cameras, but will not compare to a professional $1000+ police system. The beauty being that your headlights and streetlights will provide more than adequate lighting for your needs.
Glare and shifts in lighting are handled well, there is ghosting if you're driving directly into the sun, but it won't white-out. Day-break and dusk are better than I've seen with other dash cams (usually a very tough time for people and technology due to the sharp contrasts of light and ineffectiveness of artificial light sources)
The audio recording is VERY sensitive, it will pick up EVERYTHING you say and every noise you can imagine (so be careful what you're talking about, in case the memory card falls into the wrong hands, lol!). I was actually quite surprised that is was able to successfully record even the deep bass range (as in it can be reproduced accurately later on when played on a computer). The great quality of the audio would come in real handy to prove your side of the story against abuses by law enforcement officers.
Battery life is awful but is frankly a non-issue, it's not meant to run off its own battery for more than 10 minutes - it will not be useful as an action/helmet/body cam. It is meant to safely save and shut down the camera after power is lost due to turning off the engine, or power loss after an accident.
Overall, for the money you will be impressed; for the Canadian buyers - this is $60 CDN, no tax, no shipping - $60 that's it! Shipping was stupid fast - they ship out near the GTA, I live in Niagara and I had the camera in less than 24 hours (with the free shipping option). I've worked in security, towing, and delivery - and have seen many road scams (one of my favorites is when someone backs up or rolls into you; without a dash cam you'll be liable and charged for following too closely), $60 is incredibly cheap insurance to catch them and provide non-disputable evidence of who was in the wrong.
In my opinion, a dashcam is now an essential tool and gives me great piece of mind.
To cut to the chase this dashcam is fantastic. You simply won't get better for this price. And having had a nextbase and transcend dashcam from a well known high street carshop I can assure you that you are also not going to get anything better for less than £100.
A few points:
I had done days of internet searching for a decent 'budget' cam and the G1W is a name you will see over and over again. Many comments attached to various 'high end' cams simply say 'Why bother when a G1W is £35!"
There are fake versions of this cam about which use a cheaper chipset and thus have poorer video quality but the majority of these complaints originate from another well known auction site. There are various ways to tell if you have a 'fake' version of this cam which I wont waffle on about here. SpyTec I believe are the official UK seller for this cam.
Pros:
- Lightweight, small and discrete.
- Motion detection + G sensor
- Everything included to get going.
- Very easy to install (you probably can't even call it an installation!).
- Hardwiring is also straight forward (seperate kit required).
- PLENTY of length for the USB / Cigarette lighter power cord (I had mine in the middle of my focus dashboard, in the trim down the side of the door, under the carpet and into the power with plenty to spare).
- Video quality is fantastic. (My opinion as genuine purchases of 3 other dashcams so far)
- Built in battery.
- Very much a case of 'install and forget'
Cons
- Limited battery life. Probably around 10mins (Long enough to record if set in parkmode) but it will need to be powered for a car journey
- The 'Light' on the front stands out a little when in your windscreen. I simply used a black marker pen so its not easy to spot now.
- The light is useless! No idea why you would use it anyway, its certainly not 'infrared' and has the same illumination at a mobile phone screen!
- Could probably benefit from a more obvious 'Emergency' button where the cam will save footage that can't be overwritten (You can press the top right button to do this but many cams have a red, obvious button)
Overall:
- GET IT!!!!
It may not have GPS or Wifi but I wont use them. I had a Nextbase 312GW with GPS and Wifi and I used wifi once when I first got it and never since. The last thing I want to do when I get home is load up the GPS and check on google where I have driven... I know because I was driving. I guess there are situations where this option may come in handy (Has the garage taking your car for a spin during its service)
If you're reading this review you are probably debating getting one or can;t decide to pay a few extra £'s and get a 'better' cam.
Sure, there are always a few bad reviews for things but that's the same with any product at any cost.
£35 for piece of mind is nothing.
Otherwise the camera is of good quality, clear/sharp pictures, settings easy to make.
