Top customer reviews
I am a knife enthusiast and collector, but I have to read a lot of reviews and watch a lot of field testing videos before I commit to this adding to this expensive hobby. I had been watching the RAT-5 for a while when the price came down to a reasonable enough amount. I had read a lot of reviews about the scales/grips being poorly made and out of shape with the knife's full tang. I had also read a lot of reviews about the knife's so-called crappy sheath. Still, I pulled the trigger and bought it, figuring I'd take the chance.
The scales - They are a tannish brown in color (almost khaki) and made from canvas micarta. This differs from G10 in that it actually contains bits of canvas. In regards to the shape and fit, mine fit the knife perfectly and blended seamlessly with the edge of the steel. What I didn't like as much (and what made me hesitant to give a full 5 stars) was that the scales do appear to have a slight leftover of canvas along the edges. I can see why some folks might not like this (I wasn't upset, but it's definitely noticeable), but it's not that big of a deal. All I did and all anyone needs to do is take some fine grain sandpaper and polish off the remaining debris of canvas. It's not really that big of a deal, but enough to upset some and enough for me to take notice and consider it in my rating.
The sheath - It's a simple, nylon, canvas-textured sheath. I actually really like it. It's not a fancy kydex sheath and it doesn't have any leather, but it's molle compatible (perfect because I am going to strap it to my assault pack), has a hard plastic insert for the knife (not molded, so the knife can be inserted ambidextrously), two button straps to secure the knife in, a utility pouch that has a plastic clip and is big enough to store matches or a firestarter, and comes with about 6 feet of paracord tied to the lanyard. The money pays for the knife, but you get a pretty darn decent sheath with it too. I'm not complaining at all.
The blade - The blade came fully sharpened and its powdered black coating was well intact. The blade is a tad bit smaller than I had expected and had seen in videos, but it's still a great blade for stabbing and cutting. I'm not so sure I'd use this knife for hardcore chopping of batoning, but that still leaves plenty of great uses for this nice little knife.
All in all, I'm happy with the purchase and would definitely recommend it!
