It's definitely different from the movie. Yet if you're a fan of the movie, you will also recognize many of the elements from the film. The same general characters are involved, though the crazy guy Brad Pitt played in the movie is now a crazy woman, and she has a lot more backstory and depth than the Pitt character.

It's different enough that you are familiar with the story but at the same time don't know what's going to happen or how it's going to end. It could end up with a completely different ending than the movie did and it would totally work.

For that reason the TV show should NOT be thought of as the TV version of the movie. It's absolutely not. It's a imagination of the story based on the same source material. As such, the two don't have to and don't actually always match.

All that being said, if you liked the movie, you'll probably like the TV show. If you LOVED the movie and know it inside out and backwards, the TV show is different enough that it will probably make you hate it. If you've never seen the movie....well if you enjoy the time travel genre and post apocalyptic stuff in general, 12 Monkeys is probably for you

I am addicted to this show! It is a slightly intellectual action/thriller. Each episode leaves you wanting to see the next one. The story telling is masterful. Each story gives you another small piece of the puzzle giving you just the right number of aha moments! The acting surprised me in the that it is very good and more "movie-like" than "tv-like". Aaron Stanford is awesome as James Cole, a time traveler who lives in the year 2043. He is on a quest to stop a virus that wiped out most of the world's population (in 2105) by traveling back in time and changing certain events. The mystery comes in because he is chasing this blind, not knowing exactly what events led to the release of the virus all those years ago. I highly recommend watching this show. I know not many time travel movies or tv shows "work", but this one really does (so far).

didn't expect to enjoy the 12 Monkeys television series anywhere near as much as I have...in fact, I kind of anticipated hating it and felt more than a little disdain that it was even being made.
While it lacks the surrealist, avant garde carnival quality of Gilliam's film, it makes up for it in so many ways including the fact that time travel as portrayed within the series does allow for the past to be changed, and it has done so in some pretty interesting ways so far.
Emily Hampshire portraying Jennifer Goines (in place of Brad Pitt's Jeffrey Goines from the film) is excellent, reminiscent of Ally Sheedy in her best roles (The Breakfast Club and the appearances on Psych in particular).
The writers have done a spectacular job of stretching the premise out into this serial format and I find myself actively looking forward to what they will do next.

Fantastic New Show! Always on the look out for great sci-fi or thriller tv series I'm so happy to have found this gem, 12 Monkeys!!! The screenplays are well written. It's a sure sign of great story telling when the hour goes by in a flash & you're left wanting for more. Lead actor Aaron Stanford, (Cole) is perfect for his role as our hero, being fierce and determined to stop the wheels of an impending plague, yet retaining a vulnerability & charm which is heartwarming. The other key actors are equally captivating, Amanda Schull (Cassie) & Barbara Sukowa (Dr. Jones). Also Kirk Acevedo (Cole's best friend Ramse) which you may recognize from The Walking Dead. There's plenty of action yet it slows down when it needs to for the sake of character development. It has a quirky comic edge too, as in episode 7, 'The Keys'. It's the opening scene, at the museum fund raising cocktail party....You'll see. Delightful! This show has everything...Sci-Fi Drama, Action, Suspense, Romance & a bit of comic relief. I recommend you see it from the beginning. Enjoy!

It's been awhile since I've seen the movie that SyFy's 12 Monkeys is based off of, but from what I remember the TV series feels like it's going to live up to the film. To add to that note, it's not necessary to see the film before you watch the pilot. That being said, the pilot was reasonably entertaining in a way that didn't once loose my attention. In fact, I strongly believe if you like science fiction and time travel stories you will feel right at home with this series. Let's just hope that SyFy can keep up with the world building and story telling pace in a similar fashion they did with this first episode. I can say that I'm glad that SyFy is going back to their roots by producing shows like this one. If you missed the premier on SyFy you can watch it for free on Xbox Video.

I was pleasantly surprised by the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the original 12 Monkeys movie, and I wasn't sure how a series would take. I'm only reviewing the pilot episode here, but they made some great decisions. The first was to not try to replicate the tone of the movie. Aaron Stanford (he plays Pyro in the X-Men movies) replaces Bruce Willis as Cole in this series. They are similar mostly in name only. He's trying to locate Leland Frost - if he can end him, he can save the future from a plague. The show is much more straightforward in tone than the movie, and that's a good thing. To try to replicate Terry Gilliam's work would have been foolish. The series has started off on much better footing than I imagined it could. It's well-acted and well-written, and it has plenty of room to grow. I'll be sticking with it.
