Several years ago I maxed out its RAM (to 2GB) and installed Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (the machine was originally designed for Windows XP). Everything was working great but over the years with the installation of service packs, hotfixes, additional apps and utilities, the machine had gotten quite slow and I found the hard drive to be the performance bottleneck. After purchasing the 128GB Transcend PSD330 drive, I was able to clone my old 95GB PATA drive to this SSD, and installed it into the laptop; the drive fit perfectly, being the same form factor as the old 2.5" mechanical PATA drive (I just had to be careful to set the master/slave/cable select jumper the same way it was set on the old drive). After this change, my laptop is fast again; gone are my excessive waits browing the web, taking the machine out of hybernation, and even while starting it up. Although the PATA interface only runs at 100MB/s max (much slower than today's SATA disks), with this near-zero latency SSD the performance has improved significantly and is now more than acceptable for my type of use. In fact, the Windows Experience Index (for the hard drive specifically) changed to 5.9 from 4.2 after installing this drive in my notebook which is excellent. As you may expect it is very quiet as well (no noise at all). I can't comment yet on durability but everything else so far has been a great experience. I had tried another KingSpec PATA SSD and it did work, however it had trouble with master/slave which meant it was either a CD/DVD drive or the SSD. With this Transcend one I was able to use both (with this one in Master mode). At least with the PowerBook G4, using this SSD I can max out the transfer rate of the DMA level it supports. So it is almost nearly theoretical maximum, but not quite. So I would recommend this one if you have an older laptop and there is no possible way you can cram a SATA to PATA adapter and a SATA SSD in your system. Otherwise if you can, it would be best to stick with SATA since you can use it on more modern systems. Works well in Dell Latitude D610

The KingSpec 128GB IDE SSD drive is working very well after two weeks in a Dell Latitude D610 configured with maximum of 2GB RAM and Pentium M 2.26GHz CPU. The old 100GB 7,200 RPM hard disk was dual-boot with Windows XP Pro on partition 1, Windows 7 Home Premium on partition 2, a Data volume on partition 3, and an Application volume on partition 4.

Acronis True Image 2014 was used to clone the installed old 100GB hard disk to the 128GB KingSpec SSD drive via the system’s USB 2.0 ports to an external 2.5" IDE drive enclosure. After installing the 128GB SSD drive in the system, both Windows XP and 7 booted normally and much faster, and found and configured the new hardware.

The CPU is at maximum usage much of the time when the system is actively used, but system performance is very responsive and satisfying. Windows 7 enters and exits Sleep Mode very quickly and without problems. System startup and shutdown are also relatively quick. (A similarly configured Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 5,400 RPM hard disk frequently bogs down severely if a background task such as antivirus or Windows update activity is processing.)

The D610 is used with a notebook cooler. At idle, CPU temp is about 42 deg C, SSD temp is about 45 deg C, and CPU fan is off. At heavy CPU load (long running MalwareBytes scan), CPU temp is 80-85 deg C, SSD temp is 50-55 deg C, and CPU fan speed is 3,200-4,000 RPM. (Measured using HDTune, SpeedFan, and I8kfanGUI).

2015/11/20 Update: The Kingspec 128GB SSD and D610 continue to work very well after 5 + months. Applied Arctic Silver 5 to CPU and tweaked I8kfanGUI settings. CPU temp now at 70 deg C or less _without_ the notebook cooler even with 100% CPU usage. Installed a second Kingspec in another D610.

Firstly, these are pretty much your only option in many cases. Having said that, they work really well. 83MB/s on ATA100 with burst in the low 90's.
This can drop to below 50MB/s on some older rigs, but the drive is not the bottleneck. At these rates TRIM does not matter either. 512 byte sectors mean no alignment issues. Pay attention to the jumper if this is a slave drive. Particularly before sliding on a 40 pin converter. These will stack well in 3.5" converter trays. Comes with screws. Nice box. I have a few of these now and none have ever given me an issue. Obviously totally silent. I would definitely recommend for legacy laptops, but also I have these in Pentium 4 headless desktops and 1 Pentium 3 Server where I was previously using a sata ssd with a bridge and experiencing errors. No doco in the box, would have been useful for the jumper. I could only find a datasheet from 2008 that indicated slave was "no jumper" and master was jumper on right hand (outside) vertical pair of pins as shipped. Cannot reliably say what the other pins are for (cable select ?) and there are no pins for limiting the drive size for earlier LBA schemes. Did not test at 133/150 as My chipsets are all Intel or VIA. Just did sector for sector copy and dropped right in. On a windows machine you may get need to reactivate Microsoft Office at least, but will happen when hardware changes. I expect to get 10 years out of them.

Doesn't fit in a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop

I bought this to replace a 100 GB HDD in my Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. Unfortunately, it did not fit in the drive caddy. The problem was that the screw holes on the two sides of the SSD did not line up with the screw holes on the sides of the drive caddy. So I was unable to attach the SSD to the caddy using the two screws on the sides. As a result, I could not install the SSD with the caddy into the caddy's slot on the side of my laptop. Disappointed. It's a very nice SSD. Sturdy metal construction. I've heard a lot of great things about KingSpec SSDs. It would have been a great replacement had it fit properly.

I figured I could speed up an ancient Mac by replacing its hard drive with this, because SSD, right? Well, not so much --- the SSD is a bit faster at some tasks and actually slower at others. Overall it seemed like about a wash for my workload, which was pretty disappointing.

I'm also docking it points for arriving with exactly zero documentation (and there's none on the manufacturer's website either). Fortunately, testing showed it was configured to act as master, which was what I needed. There are a couple of pins that could probably be jumpered to choose slave or cable-select behavior, but good luck guessing what's which, and they don't give you any jumpers anyway.
