From the Inside Flap

A winged, headless goddess from the third century; a gigantic tube of toothpaste; a tribal mask; a monumental bronze statue of Buddha--these creations and more are featured in this book of sculptures that are fun to explore and important in the history of art.

Teaching k-12 at a public school in the middle of the country I needed art history books that were of a good quality yet had no nudes. First series I have seen that met this criteria, with the exception of "13 artist children should know " which was well written but had three pictures with nudity, so I can not use it here. This book "13 Sculptures children should know is very good and usable. They even have the David sculpture discretely cropped (sadly but it makes it usable here in the provinces)

What's the one sculpture everyone should know? The first one that comes to my mind is David. Hell, it's even first on the cover! For the two-page spread, though, it's only shown from the waist up. What stupid censorship. I guess only part of the statue is important.

I have been surprised by how much we have enjoyed reading this because I wasn't initially as drawn to the sculptures as I was the book on architects. But it is not well proofread--there are many significant typos that interfere with the clear communication of important information. That compromises an otherwise fascinating and fun book!

My students love to read when they finish a project early and this is a great series of books for them to learn about art.
