17 Cents & a Dream: My Incredible Journey from the USSR to Living the American Dream Kindle Edition

“Through pure determination, fortitude and attitude, Daniel pulled out of impossibly difficult situations. His story is true, his story is a personal inspiration to me and I hope it will inspire you too to maximize your potential and go for the greatest of dreams.” - Mark Victor Hansen, Bestselling Author, Chicken Soup for the Soul.

“Powerful and inspiring, Daniel Milstein’s story is a testament to following your dreams and never taking no for an answer.” - Seth Green Actor, Writer/Director

On a cold December night in 1991, a young boy with seventeen cents in his pocket first set foot in the United States. Twenty years later that young man found himself the founder and CEO of a Multi-Million dollar corporation. Daniel Milstein’s harrowing story about how his mother, father and brother escaped the oppressive government of the U.S.S.R and immigrated to the United States and carved out a life for themselves has been described as the quintessential immigrant story of the era.

17 Cents and a Dream begins with a candid, gripping account of the Milstein family’s tough life in Kiev, Ukraine under the oppressive government of the former Soviet Union. He recalls how he and his family were affected by the 1986 explosion of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant: Daniel was ten years old, and the disaster took place only 78 miles from their home, killing 100,000 people and spreading poisonous radiation throughout the environment. A few years later the family, struggling against poverty, government oppression, and anti-Semitism, made a secret plan to flee to America. After a narrow escape, the family arrived in Ann Arbor, Michigan with no understanding of English and few belongings. Young Daniel had only seventeen cents in his pocket, given to him by a friend to cover the cost of a postage stamp so Daniel could send him a letter. In the ensuing years, Daniel endured extreme poverty, endless hunger, relentless bullying from his new classmates, and cruel mistreatment while working long hours mopping floors and cleaning toilets.

“The never-ending sense of hunger in the pit of my stomach,” he writes, “became a part of me and manifested into the drive to do more, to be more, so my family could eat without worry.”

That hunger, plus the work ethic instilled in him by his grandfather, fueled Milstein’s determination; after graduating from college, he worked for various financial institutions and was consistently promoted because of his strong work ethic.

But perhaps most inspiring is Milstein’s courage and sheer willpower as he began to build upon his success in the world of finance, working harder and longer than anyone else until eventually opening and growing his own multimillion-dollar company, Gold Star Mortgage Financial Group.

"17 Cents and a Dream: My Incredible Journey from the USSR to Living the American Dream" is both a true American success story and a manual for anyone who dreams of becoming successful in today’s competitive world of finance and sales.

DANIEL MILSTEIN is founder, president and CEO of Gold Star Mortgage Financial Group. He has been recognized as the #1 loan officer in the United States; has achieved more than $3 billion in personal mortgage originations; and is one of the top 40 finance professionals in the nation, ranked by National Mortgage Professional Magazine. Milstein led the company to the Inc 500 list and one of the fastest growing companies in the United States. Gold Star has over 500 employees in 43 offices across the U.S. and has been named a Top Workplace in Michigan for three years by the Detroit Free Press. Milstein holds an honorary doctorate and BBA in business management from Cleary University, Ann Arbor, from which he graduated with honors. He is the author of The ABC of Sales: Lessons from a Superstar, which in March 2012 sold 10,000 copies and became the #1 sales book on Amazon.com and the thirty-first top seller of all ebook sales.

'17 Cents and a Dream' is the story of a man who through determination, ambition, hard work and courage rose from a manager at McDonald's to owner and CEO of one of the most successful mortgage companies in America.

The book is not a "how to" success in sales book. The author, Dan Milstein, revealed many of his sales secrets in The ABC of Sales, an Amazon best seller among business books. Instead, '17 Cents and a Dream' is an account of Milstein's early days in Kiev in the Ukraine, his family's escape to America, the cruelties he faced as an immigrant student in America, and how he grabbed the Brass Ring and steadily rose to success.

One of my favorite anecdotes from the book is during the family's early days in Ann Arbor when Dan and his father were doing landscaping work to support the family. Both worked hard and did excellent work on the client's lawn but, unfortunately, did not understand too much about American property lines and ended up making a major improvement on the neighbor's lawn as well.

Readers will enjoy Milstein's stories about his experiences mopping floors, running the drive-through, and working the night shifts at McDonald's, a job he loved so much he painted the Golden Arches on his bedroom wall. Only in America.

'17 Cents and a Dream' is a wonderful, inspiring and fun book to read. I recommend it to anyone, ages junior high up through senior citizen.

17 Cents and a Dream is an inspiring story about Daniel Milstein, a Ukrainian boy who fled from the Soviet Union just before the collapse. Milstein's family settled in Michigan where they worked hard while they awaited the day when they could be sworn in as citizens of the United States. Milstein's "rags to riches" story is a testament to a hard-working man and a country worth fighting for. A quick read and a reminder that freedom is a precious commodity that most Americans seem to take for granted these days.

I picked up this book after suggested by a friend who knew I loved to read stories of inspiration. I started reading this book last night and I couldn't quite put it down until I finished. So, what is "17 Cents and a Dream"? It is the true formula for success...

To explain what I felt for this book, I must first tell you a small amount about myself. I grew up one of two sons of a divorced mother. My brother was autistic, which presented a challenge for both my mother and I. Times were tough growing up in the 80's. We had little money. My mom couldn't afford to buy me Jordache jeans so I blended with the cool kids, and I was embarrassed every time she sent me to the corner store with a few food stamps to buy milk and bread. Yes, I had it rough; or so I thought...

Dan Milstein, a young boy from Kiev in the Ukraine had it rough. His family experienced the Chernobyl disaster up close and personal, watching the radiation eventually take the life of Dan's grandfather, experiencing persecution for his family's Jewish heritage, persecution that nearly ended in death, while living in an apartment less than 400 square foot with barely enough food to keep a bird alive. That's rough. Luckily, Dan and his brother Alex had parents who believed in them and through the good grace of God, escaped to America. But, their troubles were far from over.

America, the land of the opportunity, may be our motto, but for a family of non-English speaking immigrants, it can start as a near nightmare. How would you feel if you were thrown into a strange culture with entirely different ways, different food, and a different language unable to communicate or find work? I've been to France, Japan, and China, all for only a few days at a time. I understand culture shock, and I personally felt for this family as Dan told me his story, how he struggled to learn our language, dealt with bullies in school because he was "different", and lived on bananas and bologna for most of his early life. But Dan had a vision, one implanted in his soul by his deceased grandfather, who had always told him he was meant to be more.

The road to success isn't always paved in gold, sometimes you have to claw your way through the mud. That is exactly what Dan did. He held his vision for success, to be all he could be, to prove that the sacrifices his parents made were not in vain. Dan started his vision with a job at McDonald's and climbed the ladder of success despite the fact that no one believed he could do it. Hungry for more, he tackled his fast-food job with the thought of working five times harder than anyone. And, he did.

His hard work took him much farther, and though it was a struggle many, many times, he reached goals that most would have given up long before reaching. Now Dan and his brother are super successful business men in Michigan. There is much more to this story, and I feel like I've told you more than I should, but as I write this review this morning, the story is still etched in my mind. It's a story of overcoming seemingly unsurpassable odds and as I stated early, the true formula for success.

Of late, we are flooded with so many books on the Law of Attraction. Though I enjoy most of these books, the real secret is in "17 Cents and a Dream". It's not just about the visioning the outcome, it's about the hard work you must put in to create that outcome, the sacrifices you must make as you work five times harder than everyone else, and as I tell my students when they ask how I personally became successful, it's not about not competing with others; it's about being in competition with yourself.

So in ending, I must say, I loved this book, but I just didn't get the title. It didn't ring with me. But, when you reach the end of this book and witness the quick tale of Dan taking his daughter out for dinner, it will all make sense. All I can say is I had goosebumps as I read that final chapter.

Thank you, Dan, you've inspired me. And to the ones complaining you've had it so rough, well, I am not doubting you, as I am sure we've all experience hard-aches in one way or another, but, if you believe in yourself, you can rise above it all and live the dream, even if it starts with only 17 cents.

Sometimes heartache is a motivator for success. Through hardships people cling to the hope of something better and that's what the author, Daniel Milstein, did in his journey. Like so many Jews of his generation, Daniel and his family had to endure persecution in his native country of Ukraine during the Hitler and Stalin years. Oppression was especially hard on his family so they dared to escape from the USSR (nearly impossible in those days), and fled to America.
Freedom came with a price too. Like most immigrants, Daniel didn't speak English, he and his family were so broke they could barely afford to eat. Yet this only inspired Daniel toward success .. This is his story, find out how working at McDonald's led him to other opportunities - which eventually led Daniel to become the No.1 mortgage loan officer in the world. A great read and a reminder of why America is a land of opportunities for those willing to fight for success.
