18 Cranes by Robert Campbell is the first book in the Kaifeng Chronicles. The book is historical fiction that takes places in China. The book follows Li Bing, who a young adult, writing his examinations. These examinations are an important step for him to become part of the Chinese civil service. However, he is having a repetitive dream of 18 red-crowned cranes. In his culture, these birds have significant meaning. He seeks out advice to those important to him to understand the dream he keeps having. Li Bing is also awaiting his test results to see where his future lies.
18 Cranes is an interesting short book. It is heavy with cultural influences from China within it. While I cannot speak to the truth of historical or cultural traits for China, it was intriguing to see something from another culture within another time. The examination that he had to take was daunting. Campbell did an excellent job describing the test, how the test is set up, and how it is graded. Having someone's entire future decision based on test results is nerve-wracking, and I can understand this from personal experience.
I would also say that Campbell does such a wonderful job with his descriptions in the book. They painted beautiful pictures of what is going on in the novella. He also set a good pace for the book; it was slow and dream-like, which made it easy to follow. However, even though it was interesting, it was just a piece of the story. Given that it is a novella with sequels, I was not expecting to have a fully finished storyline. Despite this knowledge, it felt that the story was just beginning but then ended suddenly.
The book, in spite of its length, was able to evoke emotion as well. I felt the pressure of Li Bing’s tests. I could feel the possible disappointment of his family. What I do know from some Asian cultures is that family, particularly elders, is very important. When Li Bing’s grandfather said that he could now pass because he feels the future of the family is secure within Li Bing’s success on his exams. There is also a part where there is a possible marriage due to the results of his exams. This depicts a deep cultural root in the importance of education and success in education. We also get to see his different interactions with people important in his life and learning a great deal.
Overall, this book is not something I would typically read. Though I did find it to be enjoyable and interesting, it would not be something that I would read in my regular rotation of material. I am not much with historical and culturally fiction, even though this gave me a taste of the genre. I think those who do like these types of books would greatly enjoy this one. The descriptions are rich without being overwhelming, and it contains the life of a Chinese man unraveling his future.

In ‘18 Cranes: Kaifeng Chronicles, Book One’, Robert Campbell takes us to the 17th century in China. The reader is informed about the village life in the East Asian country back in the day. We are introduced to Li Bing, a boy whose future was determined by the results of his examinations. One can draw a comparison in Bing’s life with how important examinations were in the 1600s and today. Passing exams almost always guarantees you of a bright future in today's society. With Li Bing, writing the provincial-level imperial examinations would determine whether he would pass for the Chinese civil service or not. As Li Bing continues to live his life, he gets a regular dream about 18 cranes. The good student tries to figure out the meaning of the dream even as he waits for what the future holds. Bing is also conscious of the past and works towards getting to understand his goals and purpose in life.
The dreams Li Bing experienced covered a large narrative in the book. The confusion, fear, and panic the boy faced were due to societal’s expectations of him. We learn that in traditional China, the sons had to follow the traditions of the family. Li Bing’s father was a government official and this put him in a tight spot as he had to perform. Here was a young boy who wanted to pass his exams so as to impress his father, yet the dreams were confusing him and eating him up. Robert Campbell surprises the reader when it is revealed that Bing’s family has a secret. The story gets to be intense when we realize that the family secret which Bing’s grandfather was aware of could be linked to the weird dreams Bing had. The 18 cranes were the pivotal points in the dreams.
Robert Campbell gives us insight into how serious examinations are. The thorough planning, the anguish that occurs and everything Li Bing does to ensure that he is well prepared revealed how distressing it is for a student during examinations. The author with minimum effort highlighted students’ needs and how the pressure to pass can break one. The reader is also able to pick favorite quotes in the book as Robert Campbell used good diction while adding nuggets of wisdom in the paragraphs.
‘18 Cranes: Kaifeng Chronicles, Book One’ gave me the impression of living in ancient China in the 1600s. The author was not only good with the plot, but he was also brilliant within the narration. You will like the story and fall in love with the characters. The author introduced more characters in almost every new chapter, giving one the option of having many favorite characters. Li Bing’s family was not complicated but strict. I love how customs were followed and authority respected. Major themes in the book include public service, education, love, marriage, success, family, culture, and heritage.

18 Cranes is a novella written by author Robert and is the first in a series called the Kaifeng Chronicles. The story is one man's journey as he prepares to take an examination to enter into the Chinese civil service in the year 1630. As the examination comes nearer, he begins to have dreams about 18 cranes, and he strives to understand its meaning. I found this book to be an incredibly refreshing read from beginning to end. The book has a pacing, hero, and set of themes that do not follow the standard norm in contemporary literature. In fact, the book kind of reminded me of 18th century writing in many ways with its sense of character and time. The story is very introspective, and the pacing of the book moves slowly but deliberately as it brings you into the life of the main character, Bing, and his family. Bing is hardworking and just wants to be able to provide for his family while stressing over his examinations. This makes him a character that is easy to connect with and sympathize for. The book is filled with a lot of sweet moments, but those between Bing and his grandfather stuck out, especially to me as I read the book. I also really liked the setting of the book. The historical elements were clearly well researched, and the atmosphere that the author created was vivid. The journey to understanding the cranes was mesmerizing. I was fascinated not just by the dream itself but the ways that Bing went about trying to understand it; the conversations he has and introspection he works through. I found myself enjoying the writing style and Bing as a character from the first few pages of the story. I was captivated and desperate to see where the journey would take Bing. The book left me wanting more, a symbol of a great story, and I am excited to see where the rest of this series brings me.

The book was not only a very relaxing and enjoyable read, but it also provided me with a look into a very interesting and little understood culture. I was delighted to learn about the formal education system in ancient China. This was communicated amidst a blossoming romantic relationship between two young spirits, both with challenges to overcome.
