1.0 out of 5 stars This black mortar turned white when heated.
By TERRY W MITCHELL on July 8, 2019
This was purchased to seal around the housing of glass doors for the fireplace. The housing is black and the mortar was black when applied. The mortar turned white and does not match the housing. This is extremely disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works awesome to seal segmented indoor chimney
By The Longs on April 6, 2019
This works fantastic for my purpose. In my basement is a woodstove with one of those god-awful chimneys that has all the segmented sections that let’s air in to create creosote or in the summer if it reverses it let’s smoke smell out. After I took it apart and cleaned it thoroughly I put this stuff on each section as I was putting it back together. Keep a bunch of wet paper towels are wet rags handy as you wipe excess off with your fingers as you go. I’d say in 15 to 20 minutes it was semi hard. Then I just started a fire to fire the material. I have no smoke smell anymore. The draft is stronger to because there’s not air leakage. Over the next few days of having fires the excess that I didn’t quite wipe off or crack and fall to the ground but the stuff in the joints is staying strong. It’s not the prettiest up close but when you’re not standing right next to it you really don’t notice it. it dries to a very dark charcoal gray almost black. If I’ve gone slower I could’ve made it much less messy. It shows up more in the picture than it does in real life. You could definitely paint it with grill paint if you want to do afterwards. A+, five stars, two thumbs up, would play with grey fire smoo again!

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit messy to work with, but it works well!
By Dax A. Jones on November 19, 2015
I recently purchased a 37 year old house with a fireplace that was in need of repair. I received a quote to repair the cracks from the provider who cleaned the flue, and it was going to cost around $200. I purchased 2 containers of this DAP mortar and did the repairs myself. I only ended up using 1 container, which went further than I expected. It is pretty much like working with any other tube of caulk. Many of the cracks were fairly narrow, so I only clipped a small amount of the end off, so that I would be able to fill in those narrow cracks. It was fairly messy, though I am not very skilled with apply caulk, so that was to be expected. It dried fairly quickly and I was able to start a low burning fire (i.e. 2 small logs) within 2 hours after applying the mortar. The color of the mortar is black, and as far as I can tell, the color doesn't change. We plan to paint the inside of the fireplace black, so it is not an issue for us, but otherwise, the color might be an issue for some. I've included some before and after pics, showing the cracks before the repair and the black mortar after the repair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gaps between brick and fireplace insert (smoke damage)
By MommyofTwo on January 29, 2021
The insert we had was not sealed correctly when we bought the house. We started noticing smoke damage from around the sides where the brick wasn't sealed to the fireplace insert and created gaps. I did tons of research and even went to all the big box hardware stores to no avail. Apparently I was the only person who had ever experienced this because nobody was able to recommend a solution. I took a risk and found this in combination with MEECO'S RED DEVIL 1105 Fireplace Insert Insulation. We burn HOT fires and I needed something that would resist catching fire or melting with the hot fires. While this isn't "rated" for more than a few hundred degrees Fahrenheit, I took a chance. I used it to seal from the inside of the fireplace along all the seams and edges. It was messy, and required two applications. The first adhered fine, but shrinks so I had to do another seam to truly seal all the little gaps. We burn our fires once again and (upwards of 500 degrees) and it is holding strong, no more smoke damage to my brick anymore. Fresh coat of pain on the brick!

3.0 out of 5 stars Works but not black after heating and has white flakes!
By DX on January 10, 2021
Updated: after putting many layers of black paint over the grey, it's still grey and still has white flakes! Somehow the paste rejected my paint, I didn't even know that can happen.

Original:
It's easy to work with and works as it states. However, the paste is black but it turns dark grey after heating. I had to repaint it black to match the rest of the black surface. Also, there are white 'flakes' as other reviews mentioned but only along the edges of the mortar (see pic)...weird.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sealed Gas Pipe Entering Fireplace
By GaryS on December 28, 2015
My Heatilator fireplace was originally set up for natural gas or wood since it was properly vented with a full chimney. However, the gas pipe entering the fireplace had too much of a gap around it, so it needed to be sealed to prevent sparks from leaving the firewall and reaching potential combustibles in the building.

DAP's product was very easy to use with a caulking gun, pumping the product into the small, open area to be sealed. Easily shaped and smoothed to provide a professional appearance. It dried to the touch quickly.

I used a hairdryer right away to provide heat to harden, then lit a fire to cure the product. Now it seems hard as a rock with minimal shrinkage. A great way to seal areas of concern in fire boxes and chimneys.
