Since Apollo planners first began designing Florida's Launch Complex 39 at the dawn of the space race, this facility has been central to the historic feats of our age. In this World Spaceflight News Special Report, we provide technical details of the Apollo/Saturn V and Shuttle facilities, drawn from rare NASA documents - giving readers the best description available anywhere! A KSC document, "Apollo/Saturn V Facility Description, Launch Complex 39," describes the fantastic parts of America's Moonport: the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), Launch Control Center (LCC), Launch Umbilical Tower (LUT), Crawler/Transporter, Crawlerway, and Mobile Service Structure. For the Shuttle program, the Apollo facilities were modified and are in full use today. Detailed line drawings are provided for every major element of the current LC-39 facility - which would be particularly useful for anyone interested in modeling the Shuttle pad. In all, there are over 80 line drawings and 25 facility area maps!

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

World Spaceflight News has covered spaceflight and the Space Shuttle program since 1983. In addition to our flagship publication, we produce printed and electronic Special Reports and NASA videos, and the American Space Encyclopedia series of CD-ROMs. At WSN, our mission is simple: provide space enthusiasts and professionals around the globe with unique technical information and historical material about spaceflight. We hope that a better appreciation of the complexities and challenges posed by space exploration will foster increased support for man's continued voyage into space. Our love of spaceflight drives our publishing efforts, and we've been gratified over the years that readers from Austria to Australia have found great value in our work. We try to satisfy a wide range of interests by producing a broad selection of high-quality products with exclusive material not found elsewhere.

Top reviews from the United States

I had seen this on Amazon and it looked like a nice coffee table book, instead what I received was a photocopied book in a blue 1" 3-ring binder. This is a compilation of available info and not any kind of story at all, just a lot of photo copies of old drawings. dissapointing. I would NOT recommend this, especially for the cost. I will be returning my copy.

This item is a 3-ring binder full of photocopies of material that appears to have been public, at one time, but much of which is no longer readily available. I recognized many diagrams and photos as the same material that you can get from NASA and other web sites, but there's a fair amount that I had never seen before, such as drawings of the Orbiter Processing Facility.

From the description, I expected to see more on the 39A and 39B pads, especially some good dimensioned drawings for modeling, and there are some non-dimensioned isometric drawings, but there were also a lot of general maps of KSC. No Table of Contents, no index. I'd think twice before doing it again!

I was really surprised to see a copyright notice on a document that largely was lifted from NASA material!
