Editorial Reviews

YOU CAN MAKE ME DANCE, SING OR ANYTHING (1970-1975) includes: The First Step (1970), Long Player (1971), A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...to a Blind Horse (1971), and Ooh La La (1973), and features unreleased bonus tracks included with each album. These albums showcase that incredible range from bar stool anthems like Had Me A Real Good Time, Miss Judy s Farm, and Stay With Me, to tender ballads that will leave you crying in your beer like Ooh La La, Love Lives Here and Glad And Sorry.

In addition to the studio albums, the collection also features a bonus disc that gathers up nine essentials tracks that didn t appear on proper albums, including the 1973 single Pool Hall Richard, a live performance of the Temptations I Wish It Would Rain from the 1973 Reading Festival, and Dishevelment Blues, a song that came free as a flexi-disc in copies of the British music magazine New Music Express.

Limited vinyl edition each album will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl and will come packaged in sleeves that accurately recreate the original release. For instance, when you push the sleeve for Ooh La La, the man s eyes move and his mouth opens, creating a look that s reminiscent of Terry Gilliam s animation work with Monty Python.

FACES fans are going to love 'and' hate this. "1970-1975: You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything..." is both truly exhilarating and sappily infuriating at the same time. The upside is that it contains stunning remastered music with some shockingly good extras but it’s missing edits when there was room on the 'Singles' disc and it’s presented in a truly small beer way - when this best of British bands deserved the full brewery (and it's not cheap either). To the good news first...

On the 4CD Rhino Book Set "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar" from 2004 - you got 3 tracks out of 10 from the 1st LP, 5 out of 9 from the 2nd and all of the 3rd and 4th LPs bar three (as well as a hefty wad of 30+ Previously Unreleased - I reviewed it years back). Here the temptation is all 4 studio albums newly remastered in their entirety and each bolstered up with great Previously Unreleased material not available anywhere else. There’s also a 5th bonus disc with 9-tracks that mops up those 'Stray Singles' and a rare NME Flexidisc track. There’s a lot to get through - so lets get this box set's tartan trousers down and have a peek at its Bollinger-stained boxer shorts (if you get my drift)...

UK and US released Friday 28 August 2015 – "1970-1975: You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything..." by FACES is a 5CD Mini Box Set on Warner Brothers/Rhino R2 550009 (Barcode 081227954239) and plays out as follows:

Disc 1 - "The First Step" – 70:11 minutes:

2. Devotion
3. Shake, Shudder
4. Stone
5. Around The Plynth
6. Flying [Side 2]

I have both the vinyl and CD editions of this box, and as other reviewers have suggested there are differences. The vinyl set sounds spectacular, and each 180 gram LP is all analog, from what I can tell, "mastered flat" (no compression or other concessions to the contemporary market) BY INGLOT & HERSCH, who previously mastered the "Five Guys" CD box from a few years ago. (Ian McLagan was involved in production of the earlier set i.e. song selection, overall presentation - he did NOT master that box, as he told me himself in 2006). The new LPs sound better than the earlier CD box. As for the packaging it is quite faithful to original (mostly US) packaging. "First Step" & "Nod Is As Good As A Wink..." , are contained within sturdier cardboard than the originals; the front and back and inside gatefold cover graphics are glued on ("tip-on") as on the originals. "Ooh La La" uses bleached board like the original. The posters from "Nod" and "Ooh La
La" are thankfully included (the former is about 20% smaller than the massive original), as is the "moving mouth" on "Ooh La La.". The fifth disc ("Strays") gathers non-album singles. The LPs, again, sound warm, detailed, with great imaging (check 'Devotion' from "First Step") . I have not yet checked my original (US) LPs, but these are superior to any CD editions.
As for the CD box, I found the sound to be good, if a bit harsher, especially vocals, and the overall image is less '3 dimensional' than on the vinyl set.. I felt fatigue setting in after an hour, which I did not experience listening to the vinyl.

I've been a Small Faces/Faces fan for nearly fifty years. So, of course, I added this to my collection after already purchasing 2004's box set FIVE GUYS WALK INTO A BAR... and 2012's 2-disc STAY WITH ME: ANTHOLOGY. (The latter is an import.) There is certainly a lot of overlap and repetition between all three releases, but there are tracks that are unique to each of them. Consequently, you will have to purchase all three to get all the Faces tracks released by Warner Music to date. Here's what you'll find in FACES: 1970-1975.....

PACKAGING: All four studio albums are in replicas of the original vinyl releases with two notable exceptions. The FIRST STEP cover is not a gatefold cover like the original and OOH LA LA does not have the moving eyes and mouth when you press down on the top of the cover. However, they DO replicate the front and back covers and include the bonus tracks on the back of each album cover. There is also a fifth CD of singles and B-sides (all previously released on CD). All five CDs are housed in a card hinged box. Complete track listing for each CD is printed on the back of the box. [Note: When Ronnie Lane left the band, he was replaced by Tetsu Yamauchi. The only album released with this lineup was the forgettable live album COAST TO COAST: OVERTURES AND BEGINNERS. It is not included here--and you will not miss it!]

BOOKLET: This is a big disappointment knowing that Rhino Entertainment was involved with this. They also were responsible for FIVE GUYS WALK INTO A BAR and STAY WITH ME: ANTHOLOGY. Those two collections included a 64-page booklet and a 16-page booklet respectively.
