Editorial Reviews

Ana Tijoux is regarded as one of Latin America's leading female MCs. She has been nominated by the MTV Latin America VMAs for "Best New Artist" and "Best Urban Artist." Tijoux has been featured on tracks by Bajofondo, Control Machete and DJ Bitman. But it was a Julieta Venegas collaboration which helped expose her to the mainstream. With '1977,' Tijoux proves her abilities as a true rapera through sophisticated lyrics, a hypnotic jazzy voice and dynamic beats. The new album paints a picture of her childhood in France and pays homage to early 90s hip-hop that influenced her as a teen in Chile.

Alright I don't speak spanish but I know flow, and I understand production. And on this album, she has flow. Production is a little uneven and varied, though generally within a narrow band-- as in mostly mid-tempo, golden-age-of-hip hop jams and traditional verses and hooks without the fancy electronic production and the vocoder fads here. Particularly, there's a reggae beat, an underground hiphop uptempo beat, an orchestra sampled beat, a mc battle beat, jazzy boom-bap beat, abstract minimal jazzy hooked boom bap beat, traditional under tempo'ed groove R+B beat, etc...

So I say this with the utmost honesty: if you're a hip hop fan, you will love this album, even if you don't understand spanish.

Standouts are Mar Adentro, Sube, Oulala [where she raps in french (i might not know much, but i know that it ain't spanish and it ain't english)], and Problem de 2.

Oh yeah, and I hear that her lyrics are pretty deep in substance and complicated in form.

First off understand where I'm coming from. I'm not really big into hip hop although I have accumulated various artists and songs into my library over the years. That said I really liked this disc; you might even say I love it/ her voice. She commands attention with authority. Being a bilingual person I do understand and am fluent in Spanish. However, hip hop is a language unto itself that requires good listening skills to keep up with the rapid- fire rap. So do I get all her lyrics? Si y no/yes and no. Honestly some of it goes over my head but that doesn't matter as the music is way cool. I first heard Ana Tijoux while watching an episode of "Breaking Bad" and thought who is that? The song was so catchy and cool I had to find out. Thanks to my fave music app, Shazam, I found out immediately and almost as quickly ordered the disc through Amazon. I was blown away with the talent and diversity of her style. Like a good sauce she is both sweet and spicy, angry and seductive resulting in the best of both; yin and yang if you will. Her accompanying musicians and rappers compliment her quite well. The reggae beat on some tracks is infectious adding to her world beat charms. On "Oulala" she raps in French and I get don't understand but it doesn't matter because it's the universal language of music; good music that traverses boundaries and language barriers for a memorable musical experience. This makes her at least trilingual as she raps in English as well. The Chilean artist born in France to parents who were exiles from the Pinochet regime might explain her unique view of the world. She incorporates a variety of musical styles and uses the production values of incorporating the use of various elements of electronic mixing of beats and voices.Read more ›

Heard about her on NPR. Interesting background which greatly influences her sound and lyrics. Previewed a few of her songs and decided to buy the album... So Far, im pretty impressed.... Intelligent lyrics without that modern-day hip hop meaningless "bling jibberish" feel if that makes any sense.

If you complain about the backsliding hip hop has suffered in the past 10 plus years this is your album. No Habla espanol? No problemo.

Anas "flow" is universally understood. Plus you need to work your brain a bit and learn Spanish anyway.

"1977" is the work of a woman who is a incredible MC. She rhymes about things that matter. Politics, love, life. She's a thinking persons MC.

She's in her mid 30s and it's a bonus. You don't get Niki Minaj punchlines ( thank god ). Her voice is sexy beyond words. If you're a Drake or Kanye fan you probably won't understand this album. If you're fuming that real Hip Hop never gets the attention it deserves than Ana will make you happy you opened your wallet. Contention for album of the year in my opinion.

I love Ana's voice and her rapping style. I'm not a huge fan of rap, but I like rap that is creative and different from the rest. I can tell that Ana's style is fresh and the fact that its in Spanish is cool too. I speak Spanish, but even if I didn't I would still enjoy this sound.

If you haven't heard of Ana Tijoux, check out her performance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series. She's fabulous- personable, human, and delightfully inventive in her rhythms. You needn't know Spanish (or French) to enjoy this album; as long as you like music that considers social and personal issues, while also making you want to cut loose and throw a dance revolution wherever you might be (home, office, traffic jam), then you'll be oh so delighted you bought this album.

Being a person that loves the Soulquarians and the Ummah, this album is surprisingly reminiscent of that era in hip-hop, conscious rapping and amazing beats. Adding to that is a near-perfect technique that Ana possesses and a voice that brings to mind people like Bahamadia or Ladybug Mecca.

It is not easy to find latin/hispanic rappers around the world that are not all up in the "gangsta" or "cholo" image. Even those that don't, put too much effort on sounding hard. That limits their flow and lyrics, even the beats. And Ana shows much versatility in her style, and taste in music. Once you take a listen at her first album Kaos, and then 1977 you can clearly see that she is always trying something different.

This is one of those albums that lifts my heart up in this dark era in Hip-Hop, where to find good hip-hop you have to dig underground or look overseas...
