This is an excellent game. Easily one of the best I've ever played and one of my top five.
It's a RTS game, not a shooter. Graphically the game is beautiful and very detailed. You can even count the bolts (or are they rivets) on the armour plating of the tanks. About the only other game I've seen that pays such meticulous attention to detail is Achtung Panzer, another highly recommended game that even details mud on the undersides of tanks and the correct pattern of rust on vehicle exhaust pipes.
Back to Men of War:
Gameplay time is very long, with 18 missions spanning three seperate campaigns - each mission lasting in the neighborhood of an hour assuming you never fail the mission. There are also mods on top of mods for this one and some will even give you a totally different game. Coupled with the great mission editor you will get, replay value is infinite.
The sound is excellent, very high quality except the Russian to English translations are mostly flat and lack much true emotion.
The AI is very good with a couple minor exceptions being somewhat too short of a sight range for your troops and occasional pathfinding issues. The latter is no surprise for a game that fields well over 100 troops and armour on the battlefield at one time. Troop offensive actions and reactions to enemy presence and both direct and indirect fire is as realistic and effective as one can expect from a software program.
The interface is acceptable but not without it's shortcomings. Primarily you are given, IMO, a bit to much control over your units. It's no easy task to sort through soldier after soldier after soldier to see who has what and how much ammo and then loot and distribute accordingly.Read more ›
The AI isn't the best on the easy level. They do try to flank you, but if you lay still long enough they will forget you are there and walk away. On some missions, I have had to save at strategic points, just in case I didn't make the right decision(s). This is a strategic game. It is not always the easiest. It is very realistic (to a point). If you are not careful, you can and will run out of ammo. At anytime, I can take direct control of one of my men or vehicle.
The graphics are stunning. This is a must have for serious strategic gamers that like to take their time. This game has endless replay possibilities. I am waiting for the other titles to go on sale so I can try all the different games in the franchise. I already have the Vietnam war I will be playing when I'm done with this one.
$5 is great for this game, I recommend it for any one.
