It comes in a ~very~ generic package, so I assumed this was a generic-like bluetooth adapter (It is very generic). It comes with a CD, and the bluetooth adapter in the picture. It's bluetooth 2.0 like it says, but it's USB 1.1, which was kind of a bummer... But Bluetooth 2.0 has 3Mbps transfer speed and USB 1.1 is 12Mbps, so even if it is 2.0, it won't make a difference.
The plastic casing on the adapter is kinda weak. And it wiggles a bit, so that kind of bugged me. I don't know if the CD is actually worth using because I am using Ubuntu 8.04. I'm not even close to a linux expert, so it took me about an hour and a half to get my phone connected and get my wireless headphones working. The transfer speed to the phone is fast, a good 20KB/S at the least (No transfer speed shown on Bluetooth communications) Took about a minute for 5.25 Megabytes.
Using the A2DP audio profile (High Quality Sound for the Bluetooth bandwidth), my headphones sound just as good as a $25 pair of wired headphones.
As for distance, I can walk around my whole house and only in one spot did I have a break, but the audio quality dropped the farther i got away but I never was disconnected (It was about 40 feet with 2-3 walls at all times).
Overall this is a good deal, I would recommend buying it if you want a cheap and decent bluetooth adapter. But the packaging indicated no company name at all anywhere, so that's a mark off.
Other than that, I would buy it.
It's REALLY great for transferring files to your phone. Yes, it is slow, but it's really annoying to have to use a cable.
REVIEW EDIT: After like 6 or 7 months of use, the plastic that holds the dongle together broke apart into half. A quick and easy fix is just to use clear tape and tape it back together, and mine was good as new. Still working great, over a year later.
Update: Still going. Just don't unplug/replug it in often and it'll work forever. Works great with Windows 7. No drivers or discs needed, it will do it all for you. Use BlueSoleil (its like 20 bucks... just gotta shop around though) cause it has way better bluetooth stuff than windows.
I tested this with two of my machines; one running Fedora 10 and another running Windows 7 RC1. The device was installed automatically in both cases and appears to work flawlessly--there was no need to supply drivers other than the ones that Fedora already shipped with or that Windows 7 downloaded from Microsoft. Some reviewers claimed that this device is not Linux compatible, but it's utter nonsense and I doubt that the people who wrote that even actually use Linux or tried it in the past 10 years.
I bought this device so I could connect my Motorola wireless headset to my computer for making Skype calls. I never had any experience with using Bluetooth on the PC (previously I could only use the headset with my mobile phone), but I had no trouble setting this up, and it works great. This thing was worth a lot more than the $5 I paid for it, so if you don't have any computers with Bluetooth I can't think of a reason why you shouldn't buy this (or similar bargain); Bluetooth has a lot of great uses with common hardware, and hopefully it will come standard on more machines in the future.
1. Cheap.
2. Works.
Cons -
1. My laptop was unable to detect the CD. So, I am not sure if it is unique with my laptop.
2. No Manual. So, I was literary left with my brains to make this thing work. Wasn't that hard though. All I had to do was connect the device and enable the Bluetooth with the function key in my laptop.
I have installed Vista on my laptop. Thought this device would be the cheapest way to enable Bluetooth on my machine. My laptop hasn't installed device drivers until now. Still my laptop was able to connect with my phone. Since the price is unbeatable I am giving it five stars. I had purchased this device from Amazon.com (as the dealer).
Pros
- It is small as a flash drive
- It accepts of all of my bluetooth-enabled devices (stereo headset, speaker, and cellphone)
- Once the device is paired with this adapter, it is easier to reconnect/re-pair to that device again.
Cons
- Small (may lose sight of it)
- Does not come with keychain or a hook (you know.. to hang on to it)
- Not exactly hassle-free to connect/pair with new devices. (You need a little bit of critical/analytical thinking and patient)
- It only work on Windows, but not linux (therefore I only used it for my Window XP computers)
- It may not work on every computer. (I'm struggling to make it work on my work computer like Sometimes it won't connect and Sometimes it pair, but no sound come out of my bluetooth speaker/headset. At this time, I'm still working on it.)
- Its frequency is 2.4GHz (may create some interference for some devices)
