Editorial Reviews
Review
"An encouraging, upbeat, and useful call to host parties and make friends. This debut guide offers a new strategy for meeting people and networking. There's a touchingly earnest element to the way the author leaves nothing to chance. He devotes energetic attention to everything from handling RSVPs (don't spam people) to managing the right mix of attendees and preparing the space for an influx of guests. He provides innumerable helpful hints and "party pro tips" for prospective hosts, everything from posting little map directions on the stairs ("Almost there! You look great!") to a wide array of possible icebreakers designed to get people talking and having fun. Anyone who has ever attended a networking event (or a dinner party) will fervently hope that Gray's idea takes root and becomes universal."

Let’s be real…as an adult, it is hard to make and keep friends.
As a pretty introverted and analytical person, I used to feel the clash of needing a powerful social network while knowing the pursuit felt like a heavy burden.
This book is a practical master checklist to party hosting with real & lived context in between. 2-Hour Cocktail Party doesn't take itself too seriously. It's fun and light - a nice reminder that parties shouldn't feel so stressful.
The 2-Hour Cocktail Party:
- Takes the inefficiencies and awkwardness out of meeting friends in your adult years
- Fixes the problem of aimless “networking”
- Helps you learn to navigate and command a presence in group situations
- Makes party set-up, hosting, and break-down a formula to set on auto-pilot, so you can focus on having fun with your guests
- Can help grow your social confidence too :)
PS: I've been to several of Nick's parties, as well as ones hosted by readers of this book & I can confidently say that they are great! This structure works, the parties are memorable, and there's always a batch of unique people in attendance.
It's a quick read and gives you a step-by-step blueprint for how to host events to build a quality social network. The author has an upbeat and lighthearted tone that makes it all feel fun and achievable while also being highly motivational. I've hosted six enjoyable and well-attended cocktail parties using the book's guidance. Several of my guests have been a little shocked by how smoothly the parties run and by my attention to detail (when I was only following the recommendations).
I find myself spontaneously using the same icebreaker format it teaches when I meet groups of people at other events because it works so well to connect with new potential friends.
Finally, the author seems to really want to help you succeed and he encourages you email him, so I did. We live in the same city so he even attended one of my parties. 🙂

Okay…
Very entertaining.
BUT - we Brit’s will read it and wince a little. I do believe there would be a way to tweak the cheese and make it a little more British in delivering a party.
If you’re in your 20’s to 30’s trying to make your mark in life - it’s a brilliant book.
If you’re older, wiser, grumpier, have had kids - you may struggle….or let me say, possibly won’t care so much to bother.
But I will say this, if you are going to do it….start now…as it will be very cool to blame the book to your guests as to why you have organised this weird cocktail party event, and that will be very humorous and fine for the next 1 or 2 years - but I think this book will spread like wild fire and will be a buzz book of the modern time (next 2-3 years). Once everyone knows this book in self help/ business book world it surely will have become an exhausted and well known gimmick. So let’s see. Congrats to the author as I expect him to live handsomely from this book. Congrats for finding a fun and refreshing angle
What didn’t work in the UK
- Icebreaker about breakfast is too safe for the UK and becomes tedious for groups of more than 10
- Guests were impressed with bios but didn’t read them
What worked
- Setting party times
- Nametags(!?!)
- Group photo
Overall it would be great to have a UK version of this book.
Nick’s shared some very interesting cocktail parties over the years (dinosaur themed, anyone?) that made me want to be a part of, so after reading this book I’m excited about bringing cool people together again after so long.
Having hosted my fair number of gatherings big and small, I learned and have used ideas from Nick’s book and would recommend it.
I’m the type who planned a lumberjack-themed birthday pub crawl, which included me calling up bars and asking if they wouldn’t mind me bringing 30ish people dressed in plaid to their establishment and stopping for poutine at the end of the night. My priorities were to have an easy to say yes to and a visually cohesive group look (plaid and suspenders being less common in June!) So I loved how thoughtful Nick was in testing elements of successful cocktail parties.
Finally, if you’re a checklist type, the end of each chapter will be your quick flip through after reading for a refresher!
One with name tags, where people feel comfortable and you also get out of your comfort zone.
There are some great ice breakers contained within.
But the greatest value is how to foster a community that you support, and who support you.
And i think this is Nick's super power.
Helping become someone that helps others.
And of course, this is the best way to help yourself.
Must read!
I bought the kindle version and a hard copy.
