Simple, Easy to use, and Dirt Cheap!!

I have an old Compaq laptop computer with two old USB 1.1 ports (ports are molded/framed into laptop case and not easily removable). I have quite a few USB 2.0 devices (Digital Camera, USB Flash Drives, USB 1TB Western Digital Hard Drive, Webcam, Wireless adapter, etc) that I use on my desktop computer which has USB 2.0 ports. I notice a large decrease in data transfer speed when using these same devices on my laptop with the USB 1.1 ports. So I've been wanting to upgrade my laptop to USB 2.0 ports for a while. My laptop had the type II/type III expansion bay open (unused), so after doing some research here on Amazon and reading many positive reviews here on Amazon, I decided to purchase this product to insert into the expansion bay of my laptop.

I'm very happy with this product. Reasons:

-DIRT CHEAP here at Amazon.

-Truly does fit all the way in my Type II bay and is flush with the end of the bay, so looks good.

-Was very easy to install. I'm running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Figured I'd try my luck and let Windows choose the drivers for this device (I NEVER installed the drivers that came on the included Driver CD). With my laptop powered off, I simply inserted the card into my type II port, then powered on my laptop. Windows immediately found the new card, automatically installed all the drivers ("Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" and also "NEC PCI to USB Host Controller"), and told me my device was ready to use. That simple!! And I tried one of my USB Flash Drives and PRESTO! - it worked perfectly and at USB 2.0 speed!!
Couldn't believe it installed that clean and easy!!

Included in package from Amazon:

-Laptop Card

-Driver "Setup Software" mini-CD. (Note: I never installed these drivers and my laptop card works perfectly).

-Cable. One end of this cable inserts into a slave USB port (in my case an old USB 1.1 port) and the other end inserts into the middle of the Laptop card (between the two USB 2.0 ports). Please note the cable is approx 30 inches (approx 76 cm) long, measured from tip to tip. This was *plenty* long enough for my laptop setup. Cable not needed (does not have to be connected) unless you're using your laptop card to power certain high-drain USB devices. Card worked fine (provided enough power) stand-alone to simultaneously run two (2) USB Flash Drives just fine. Cable was NOT connected when I did this setup and everything worked well.

This is /almost/ perfect with my old Compaq n600c

This is /almost/ perfect with my old Compaq n600c. One big problem I had at first was sides weren't crimped down quite enough, so it wouldn't slide into slot without way too much force. Lightly squeezing a pair of pliers down both sides fixed this with no problem. (this is why 4 stars instead of 5... Works fine, but had to fix first.)

One issue I can see with it is the usb>tiny barrel plug aux power cord that comes with it sticks straight out of the side of the laptop just waiting to be bumped and break things. It would be much better if it had 90° connectors to help keep it out of the way. Thankfully, I won't need to use the cord often as the primary use will be for a scanner and occasional flash drive, which don't require the extra power.

Another thing, if you're going to be swapping things a lot, might want to invest in a short usb extension cable to leave hooked up to plug things in and out of. With how thin this is, it doesn't appear like it would take a whole lot to accidentally break one.

Buggy, underpowered for most devices, froze a lot, no firmware update available, and included power cord did not work.

Buggy but somewhat useful. Also, I could not use external drives as they froze the whole computer until the card was ejected. It requires too much power for most devices, and thus freezes up the computer, even though that Is the only reason to have purchased this device. A mouse, an external fan, and other small devices work well, but that is not why I bought it. Also, when I looked for firmware upgrades, which were all over the Internet, the ones tha I tried would not work. They stated that I needed to get mine from the distributor. The distributor, however, did not have an updated firmware.

Moreover, this device came with a power cord that was supposed to handle the increased power demand from devices such as hard drives. The power cord did NOTHING! With it plugged in, the device eas actually MORE buggy. Go figure...

No Joy

5/4/15 Only 1 star because it did not work for me. I have an IBM Thinkpad 760 running WIN98 SE, this is not my only computer, but I keep it for legacy software that does not respond well to WIN7 compatibility mode, or to Linux WINE. I am an experienced computer user for over 20 years. I was hoping to use this for jump drives and a mouse but I never got the chance. It simply was not recognized as existing or working, might have just been doa. The drivers downloaded and updated fine but to no avail. I also searched for other drivers on line and tried a few but no joy. So if you have a WIN98 SE computer it may not work as indicated elsewhere in the reviews and answered questions, or once again it may have simply been doa I did not try a replacement.
