Those looking for artistic purity will be terribly disappointed, but those looking for artistic license will have a great time of it, as I did.
The movie centers around the strong and beautiful character as portrayed by Julie Cox; she is the fulcrum of everything that happens: Her Father's love for her, Nemo's fanatical desire for her, and the more natural attraction that she shared with the swash-buckling Ned character. But make no mistake, it is for her attentions that all occur, and as a "variation" from the original story ( some might consider it a deviation! ), you simply have to let yourself go, and enjoy it for what it is.
And what it is are three very strong actors: Julie, Crenna, and the inscrutable Ben Cross, and their interactions aboard the mythical Nautilus, mythical only in the sense that submarines like it, had not yet been invented when Verne wrote the story. Personally, I found it just as fascinating as any other version, and the underwater scenes of coral life were magnificent.
yes, the CGI on the "monster" ( some sort of giant manta ray ) were cheesy, but nonetheless, it put them at great peril, and added a little excitement to the ending, I say ending very loosely, because this particular version just screams for a follow up sequel.
I felt like the musical score didn't really fit.
The special effects were kind of hokey in places, and acting was sort of stiff.
I think the old Disney version of this Jules Vern classic was better.

This 1996 Film version was made for TV. The acting, sets were really great. The underwater sequence with the sharks was thrilling.
Watch out for Paul Gross (Due South) who plays 'Ned' in this film. Paul Gross's take on Ned was great. There's no Giant Squid in this version, but some other sea 'monster' creature that attacks Captain Nemo's submarine, with great effect.
The Walt Disney Version is a classic, however if you watch this film as an independant entity, this 1996 version is an enjoyable feature.
The DVD itself has the original picture 4:3 format and sound is in digital stereo.
Well worth a look at for this very low cost Region One DVD.
