Editorial Reviews

A Dischord box set? It may seem like an oddity to many who know little about the label, but when you think about it, it makes absolutely perfect sense. Many of the D.C. bands were and are known for amazing live shows, blowing most "punk" bands out of the water. Unfortunately, given these bands' tendency to break up after a year or so, those in the other parts of the country and the world couldn't necessarily make it down to the 9:30 club to check out Severin or Soul Side -- hence, the existence of Dischord as a label. Initially started just to document one band (the Teen Idles), it has served to document the ever-growing musical family that has come to represent some of the best music Washington D.C. has to offer. And now, after 20 years, a compilation comes along (each band is represented with one song on the first two discs) that is not only beautifully laid out, but an absolute necessity for fans of either the label as a whole or just one or two bands. On the first two discs, the progression of the label is spelled out chronologically, beginning with the rapid-fire hardcore that D.C. bands like Minor Threat, Government Issue, and Faith used to establish the scene in the early '80s. Around track 16 or so, the whole thing explodes. Bands no longer take the faster-then-hell approach, and more melodies and complexities take over. While many of the people here appear in many different bands, there was an obvious concerted effort to keep pushing things past the confines of what constituted "punk," including the supposed birth of emocore (Embrace, Rites of Spring), the blend of personal issues with politics of the Nation of Ulysses and Fugazi, the power pop of High-Back Chairs, or the monster surf punk of Slant 6. The third disc, made up entirely of rare and unreleased tracks moves in much the same order but tends to be a bit heavier on the "hardcore" side. If this isn't your cup of tea, it is more than made up for by rare tracks by Shudder to Think and the brilliant "Word" by Fugazi. (Not to mention an extremely old interview with Ian and co. from way back when and vintage live footage of some of the original hardcore bands on the scene.) There are moments on the box that may throw people for a loop, musically. But the fascinating part is hearing the progression of the scene from a high-octane hardcore hotbed to a more arty, experimental, and wide-ranging purely musical scene. Listeners will have an interesting time trying to peg down just when that shift occurred. Was it Rites of Spring? Beefeater? Shudder to Think? It's important to note too that not every moment/song/band is going to touch people. Fans of the early work the label released will probably not go crazy for High-Back Chairs, and Autoclave fans may not dig S.O.A., but that's missing the point. And the point is? The point is that Dischord is a label devoted to documenting music, not supplying it with an image or a marketing strategy. And this collection is the ultimate proof. [The set also contains an amazing book that contains photos, essays, descriptions of the whens, whys, and hows of each band and song as well as a pictorial discography.] ~ Chris True, Rovi

It's always worthy when a good, in this case, great label releases their best and also unissued material. I haven't slogged through the entire box set tho I think I pretty much sampled most of the songs. Part of the problem is that as I've aged, and I was old when I was punk rocking in depth in the 80's, I was 26 in 1980 and, believe me, I was among the oldest 1% or so of the punx around at the time to my memory. But, since I haven't forced myself to keep liking punk by the time I got this box set, which is well done, my old ears just don't have the same intense appreciation for the bulk of the music as I used to. And, I gotta admit, I haven't cared for everything that Dischord released. Of course, they did some of the most brilliant issues of all time, every Minor Threat record, the 4 7"s/lp reissue of them, Flex Your Head, the Faith/Void split lp, all will stand the test of time well and have. But I guess there were some bands they released that I just haven't gotten into that much. I'm a big fan of Superchunk, pretty much everything they did except a latter album (Chairs, ugh). Their label, Merge, has released tons of bands and I can find narry a one that satisfies even remotely close to Superchunk. At least Dischord did way more than that. Both bands, Minor Threat and Superchunk, were noble to do their labels and I'm glad they did. I'm glad I bought this box set. I'll dig into it a little more if God gives me the time to enjoy it over the coming years.

On the basis of the ambitiousness of this project alone, "20 Years of Dischord" should garner a really high star rating. Now, while I'm not too keen on some of the bands on the second disc -- it's just not my taste -- I LOVE the majority of tunes on the first and third discs. The huge, beautiful full color booklet is a great touch too. Makes for nice bathroom reading. ha.
Anyway, one thing I really enjoyed about this set is the chronological order that shows a very clear evolution in "the DC sound." First you get the primitive hardcore of Teen Idles and Untouchables. These are great bands, but they lead up to the real meat of the first disc: The CLASSICS from Minor Threat, GI, SOA, Void, Youth Brigade and Faith. But the neatest thing about it is as soon as the Faith song is finished, you can tell the DC sound had reached a turning point. "20 Years of Dischord" really demonstrates, as never before to those who weren't there in the early years of harDCore, how important Faith was to the scene. They're the true roots of the "emo" style that would develop later, with introspective lyrics, more complicated and melodic guitar work, and less harsh vocals. They're still a hardcore band, yeah, but they do mark a departure from the straightforward thrash of Minor Threat and the others.
After Faith, things get more melodic, with Marginal Man, Embrace and the impeccable Rites of Spring. There's plenty of just "what the hell" type stuff from the "Revolution Summer" era too... take Beefeater's almost metallic funk-punk and The Snakes' silly "Snake Rap." Other mid-era highlights include Gray Matter and Dag Nasty.

This one arrived last night, and while there are too many tracks to absorb in 12 hours, I'm already in awe. Over the course of 2 discs you get to hear the way punk rock changed over the last 20 years in Washington, DC. Disc One is mostly hardcore punk, but it begins to change around the time Rites Of Spring - Drink Deep is heard. Disc 2 is my favorite so far because it features 2 of the best bands ever, Fugazi and Jawbox, who have shaped the sound of post punk and related genres. I haven't even gotten to the rarity disc and I can honestly say this is the best box set I've ever heard. Also, the 134 page booklet with biographies of every band on the cd is priceless. Its well written with introductions from Jeff and Ian (the founders of Dischord, not to mention musical masterminds behind Minor Threat, Fugazi, etc..) and Henry Garfield (who is now known as Henry Rollins). Lots of cool pictures are included as well. The great packaging only hints at the music thats inside. Please, if you buy anything this year, make it this box set. Never before has something been so worth the money. ...

This wonderful box set comes with a 134-page booklet full of information and photos (one page of text on a band, with a facing page of a photo/photo collage of the band, for 48 bands; at the end, pictures of the 132 releases of the first 20 years, a list of split-label releases, then staff photos), a compilation from the official releases, a compilation of unreleased tracks and other rarities, along with six video clips. The front cover shows Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson sitting in the Dischord office in 1980 then again in 2000 - it's kind of like the Beatles in the 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 compilation albums; Jeff has lost more hair than Ian has, that's for sure. There is also a code to download a batch of songs from the next 10 years of Dischord history (2001 to 2006, or so).

In the intro, Ian and Jef's talk about the set itself and its difficulties in finding the material (i.e. tracking down devices that could play some of the obscure formats that the original tapes had been recorded onto, etc), while Henry Rollins' intro sets the scene, from the late '70s (Bad Brains, the Enzymes, the Extorts). DIY releases were unthinkable at the time, but then there was Skip Groff's early support of young bands, along with Don Zientara's Inner Ear studio (where the early Bad Brains shows had been recorded). First two bands, the Teen Idles, and the Untouchables, represent brothers Ian and Alex MacKaye respectively, and the bands playing on the first Dischord show (discs 01 and 07 respectively). The story of State of Alert - Henry taking the remains of the Extorts to form a band. Minor Threat and SOA debuted at the same gig with the Untouchables, Black Market Baby and Bad Brains (!!!!).
