He took hundreds of photos of them which, when combined with period photos of the movie s production, form a complete record of the models from this film. About the Author

Jean-Marc Deschamps is a French author and journalist specializing in SFX history and model making. His life-long love for modeling led to his being hired by the model shop of the French television station TF1 where he was responsible for the scientific models used during TV news. He loves to share his passions through magazine articles, documentaries and exhibitions. For the commemorative centennial of the death of Jules Verne in 2005, he wrote a book on the actual inventions of the renowned French author. The book which took years of research and model making, showcases the exacting reproductions of the machines described in the novels, which are now owned by the Jules Verne s Museum. Jean-Marc is interested in photography, space, astronautics and science fiction movies. He s a gospel singer and writes songs. He lives in France with his wife Véronique.

Amazing reference compliation

The book is a fantastic documentation of the filming models built for 2010. If you're at all interested in the Leonov or the Discovery ships from the movie, this will give you nearly everything. Not just photos, of which there are many, but also painstakingly compiled maps and diagrams of the panel layouts/details on parts of the ships.

Just be aware that there are significant differences between the 2001 and 2010 versions of the Discovery, albeit ones that only show up on direct comparison, so this shouldn't be used as a reference for modeling or illustrating scenes from 2001.

My only complaint would be that many of the photos are very aggressively corrected for lighting and contrast issues. It's very clear that the photos were taken in extremely bad lighting using only a camera mounted flash, and had to be pushed to the limits of the original data in Photoshop to recover. While the person taking the photos was very dedicated to capturing every detail of the models, they were not experienced or adequately equipped for the job. The photos are a goldmine when it comes to details, even enabling you too make out the model building techniques used (this bit was wood, this bit was a model kit part, this bit was a vac-formed, this bit was a resin casting, etc.), but they are pretty rough in terms of contrast, and kinda unreliable in terms of color accuracy.

Rating a book of an underrated film

2010 is a film which has the misfortune of being the second part of one of those masterpieces which periodically dot filmic history, that being "2001". Besides, it was premiered on 1984 and audiences were a bit saturated of sci-fi films, so "2010 the year we made contact" with its "hard" sci-fi looks, was basically ignored. An additional factor were the changes on its storyline from the original novel, linking it to then contemporary events (USA-USSR confrontation, Central America...). Despite being a good idea in the moment (remember, 1984 was the "high noon" of president Reagan duel with USSR, now it seems a bit dated. After all, just five years later, Soviet union began to implode... and that was the end of it, at least for a time.
Something as the idea of a Soviet Union in 2010 (and leading the space career in that) was simply ludicrous (specially taking into account the sorry state of Russia in the years between 1984 and 2010.
In top of this, one must bear in mind that in those years pre-internet there was no mammoth flux of information about things so secondary as sci-fi movies: the comic adaptation (no big deal), some "Space Frontier" rpg modules (of at least marginal value)and two Jackill's sets of blueprints. With time, things began to change, but, even in that, "2010" was largerly overshadowed by its bigger brother.
And so we arrive to the "SSSR starship Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov", one of the most fascinating sci-fi ships ever developed. whose influence is explicit on the design of other fictional starships (the Omega Destroyer of "Babylon 5" is a case in point), but despite of this, and even on this age were trivialities receive an almost obsessive amount of attention, there was not almost anything: some artesanal blueprints, isolated references on internet... Mr Deschamps changes that, giving on this veritable "tour the force" a complete description of all the models of this film, but Lion's share is for the Leonov. As you can imagine, this scrapbook is a veritable treasure trove of graphic information about the models, with literally hundreds of photos, some offering unrevealed detail to the most obscure aspects of the Leonov. The other models also receive a detailed photographic coverage, which is fitting since Mr Deschamps states clearly that this work is for modelers.
The book also offers an interview with Mark Stetson and two charming details: a reproduction of a real painting by cosmonaut Alexei Leonov and closing the book with a tribute to Arthur C. Clarke and Roy Scheider.
Then, why am i giving just four stars? In my humble opinion the book would have been complete if Mr Deschamps had included detailed blueprints of the models, or at least accurate measurements of at least the more obvious aspects of the ships. After all the book begins auspiciously giving some scales, and trying to solve one of the crux of sci-fi models that being of disparate measurements (Battlestar Galactica being an obvious example), in this case related to the comparison "Discovery"-"Leonov". To my regret, Mr Deschamps does not go beyond this issue, and even this discussion is summarily dispatched.
A pity since I'm pretty sure that the writer, being an accomplished model maker as well as the owner of a fabulous collection of 2001-2010 models and memorablia, is fully capable of coping with these technicalities.
This being said, the book offers good value for its money: Functional binding, good quality paper at just 19'95$

Great book for Modelers

If you want to build any of the kits (from scratch) from 2010, this is a must have book. The entire book is full of color (and a few black and white) photos, covering every inch of the scale model used in filming.

Also included are photos and some written information on the Discovery, and other vehicles used in the movie.

The author is a fan of the film from the beginning, and has done well on his research. I don't think you will find better information in print or on the internet.

The book is printed on gloss paper.

Walk-around photo tour of a spaceship

Page after page of close-up, detailed photos of the filming models, documenting elements of their design and construction, but primarily of the finished product. More than enough here to build your own version, or better appreciate what does not show well or is simply not available on screen. This book documents an aspect and relic of film making that CGI has all but destroyed, and in many ways movies are poorer for it.
