The book is sectioned off into several parts, including a "How to...," agent listing, book publisher, article publishers, trade journals, conferences, and competitions. It is still a very useful tool to have, but you need to know going in that if you have a full manuscript that you want to get published, there are going to be fewer options for you to look at in the 2011 Writer's Market.
Here's the problem, in my opinion, with the 2011 edition - the section on actual book publishing companies is perhaps 10% of the book! The bulk of the book is actually dedicated to the magazines and trade journals. This is probably because book publishers are going out of business, but it was a shock to see how little of the Writer's Market is dedicated to them.
Also, if you buy this, you do not need to buy the 2011 Novels and Short Stories Writer's Market. The overlap between the two is too great to warrant buying both.
My next step was to check out Amazon to find what nearly new copies were available. I found a like new used copy at a good price of the 2011 edition. I ordered it and now have my own copy readily available on my handy working resource shelf.
I have over 1,000 pages of valuable information featured in each year's publication, a whole new wealth in fresh articles to read, an index filled with hours of ideas to research, read, assimilate and put into practice. I should be kept stimulated and busy for the next several months, until the 2013 edition comes out, and meantime I can fall back on the library for today's information if I need updates.
This is my introduction to the Writer's Market. I am already highly recommending to every serious beginning writer to get their own personal copy of a current or recent addition, and plan to get updated issues on a regular basis.
The Writer's Market is an exciting, important reference resource for every writer.
