A fine political analysis encapsulating the large but soluble challenges facing the Republican Party as it seeks to regain power in the 2016 presidential election. The author has outlined a clear path for building a winning- and ultimately governing- center-right coalition that can tackle the serious issues facing the country. He also employs sophisticated polling to test how Republican positions and rhetoric match up to the aspirations of the broader electorate. I recommend this document to Republican candidates and strategists seeking to develop a vision for the GOP that can produce sustainable majorities in 2016 and beyond, and attract a governing coalition that can grow the economy, reform entitlements, and offer leadership on the world stage.
I read this book with interest, regret and alarm. Interest because I found its conclusion surprising in some instances and reassuring in others. There is lots of data in here, mostly gleaned from public opinion polling, about what Americans really think. The conclusion is surprising: we lean center right. Not what you would think based on the last presidential election. That’s encouraging. There may still be hope for this country.
Regret only because I wished this book had been written in time for the 2012 presidential campaign and that the candidates had read it. If they had, maybe we’d already be on our way to better times.
Alarm because, as is well demonstrated in this book, Republican presidential candidates have so far failed to adequately acknowledge that America is changing – indeed has already changed in significant ways -- and opinions have changed too. Republicans have been tone deaf. My fear is they will continue to cater to extremes in the party and not listen to the sensible center – or center right – that is both the heart and majority of this country.
But there is hope. It’s clear from public opinion that overwhelmingly Americans are not extremists, and that the basic values of the center right are the same as those of the majority. The message of this book is that Republicans – if they want to win the presidency in 2016 -- will have to change their message and tone, become more outspokenly inclusive (so far, they haven’t been great at that), and recognize that at least some of their positions on social issues are outdated. I couldn’t agree more. May we, please, get at least one candidate who gets the message.
Mr. Ayres offers exceptional advice that would have turned the Presidential victory into a landslide in favor of the GOP, except it was thrown out because Donald Trump is the nominee. Republicans have to understand that the demographics within this country are changing and that it is a losing battle to keep fighting it and creating a racial divide. With Trump, the Democrats are the biggest winners in 2016.
Are you running for a local or state office and are afraid of getting tripped up by national policy questions, and you're not sure of how to phrase your answers? Or are you a political junkie who can't get enough of discussing the Big Issues? Then this book is for you. Whit Ayres gives you a step by step guide on how to express yourself coherently on some of the biggest issues of the day. Don't paint yourself into a corner, get this book!
Whit Ayres has very skillfully read the tea leaves. This volume clearly spells out what candidates and voters need to be thinking about in terms of issues and priorities. The presidency is there for the taking but only if smart aspirants pay attention to what Mr. Ayres has clearly provided. I hope we don't look back at this book in a couple of years and regret lost opportunities.
Here is the pathway for center right ascension to win WH and set national agenda as demographics change over the next few decades. Thoroughly documented. Whether it's today's GOP or a new center right coalition, Ayres has drawn the map.
Wise words by my friend, Whit Ayres. A long time pollster with a love for public policy, Whit expertly navigates the narrow divide between.good policy and good politics. It's a must read for any Republican or Independent voters looking to navigate the 2016 election.
Lots of fact based data and great insights concerning our demographic trends combined with how Americans really view our core issues. Some bias toward the political establishment and no commentary regarding our failed experience with a first term senator and the public's view about needs for executive experience.
