The criteria depend on the type of product and can include energy efficiency, reduction of fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-Gases), and end of life management. Products meeting 50% - 75% optional criteria are “Silver” and those meeting more than 75% are “Gold”.

I've been in love with the thing ever since I laid on eyes on it in the Apple reveal a little while back. The lovely colors, form factor, and price...it just kind of seems like the perfect personal-use computer. So when my wife said she wanted one I was kind of overjoyed that the thing would be in my house.
I did my research. The lowest cost model has throttling on the CPU because it includes an ineffective fan. The base model also lacks fingerprint logon. This was an absolute MUST for my wife because she would frequently leave her computer on because she forgot the login password. Adding the fingerprint sensor would both increase security and drastically decrease friction/frustration.
I bought the machine "open box" from Amazon in "acceptable" condition. This made me a bit nervous but saving $400 was the only way we could (sort of) afford the machine. Once it arrived I was further nervous because it arrived loose in-box rattling around. Once my wife opened it up though, the machine was BRAND NEW in appearance, other than the keyboard and mouse being totally dead battery (left on). My wife plugged them in, turned it on, and got to work transferring her data over.
I've done IT work all my life and I've never seen such a beautiful computer with such a fantastic out-of-the-box experience. First, there's the gorgeous color. I chose the lavender option and it's just BEAUTIFUL. Incredibly thin, unobtrusive, get LARGE feeling screen. Oh the screen! I own a bunch of Windows laptops and the Apple screen makes them look like absolute garbage. The deep color saturation, beautiful contrast, and well-balanced brightness makes all the colors looks beautifully saturated and luminous (almost glowing). The semi-gloss screen has perfect light distribution and is crisp as a new thousand dollar bill. The sound from the speakers is full and well-balanced, with clean clear tones in the mid and low range (no bass thumping, no rattling, no distortion of any kind) and clear clean crossover with no gaps between high, mid, and low range. My wife put on her lo-fi ambient music and exclaimed something like "These speakers are GOOD!!!! I can use them for LISTENING TO MUSIC WHILE I WORK!!!!".
Up to this point my wife had had to rely on something like an Echo Dot or headphones. Likewise, Zoom calls are preferred on this machine because we get vocals as clear as a bell with the full mid and low tones of vocals and none of the tinny distortion Zoom gives over a phone speaker.
How is the performance?
Effortless. My wife primarily needs file transfers, web page viewing, light video editing, music listening, media uploads, and image editing. It's all buttery-smooth. She was doing some work and exclaimed "This is SO much easier!!!!" Some people are weeping that it doesn't come with more ram and bigger storage.
My wife only needs an external hard drive for long-term storage and her work easily fits on the included 256gb drive. Likewise for image editing and web usage 8gb is fine. It sucks that it can never be upgraded, but unless you are doing professional full-time image/video/3D editing I don't see the average person ever running out of ram, let alone the professional who has like editing/uploading needs.
Oh yeah, the unit found our Wifi and and has blistering fast upload/download speed compared to the 10 year old MacBook Pro. Strong Wifi signal. No dropouts. Smooth, smooth, smooth.
We got this for my wife as a home office upgrade/wedding anniversary present and couldn't be happier. It still had 30 days Apple Warranty so we were able to sign up for Apple Care immediately and ensure the device will be usable for a long time. The last machine lasted 10 years and cost around $900 dollars. That's $7.50 a month. So far Apple products have been a ridiculously good return on investment for my wife and greatly enhanced her career as an artist.
If you have a recent Apple machine this might not be a huge upgrade, but if your Apple machine is 5 years old or more you are going to enjoy a tremendous upgrade. Out-of-the-box you are going to be able to ditch login passwords to the machine forever once you set it up, and Apple is now rolling out their service to eliminate ALL password usage across the Apple ecosystem based on new passkey standards. That alone is worth the price of admission for the casual user. Throw in a gorgeous screen, great built-in speakers, and buttery-smooth user experience and you have a winner.
I want another one. That's the highest compliment I can give. When my current Windows work laptop dies I'm getting one of these for sure.
I didn't know what an ordeal it would be to use a SuperDrive with it. For those of you who don't know, A SuperDrive plays most discs--audio CDs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, pretty much anything except Blu-Ray. It also has the ability to write (play) those formats. I still use audio CDs. I have a HUGE iTunes Library, which I have been building since iTunes first existed (iTunes started as a way of storing music from CDs). This is my 3rd iMac.
I had assumed that to solve my lack-of-ports problem, I would be able to use a standard USB hub. It worked fine for the 2 aftermarket external Hard drives I have. But not the SuperDrive.
Finally, I got advice from the Apple Support Community to buy an Apple-specific adapter cable. It works!
Other than those issues, this is working out to be a damn nice computer... It's plenty fast and the picture quality is stunning. It's a little light on storage--256 GB--but that's Solid-State storage, like what's in a thumb drive, so it's faster and more durable. And right now, storage of most kinds is very inexpensive.
Now, everything is working well. I'm glad I bought this.
