Stangis, an executive who works in sustainability and corporate responsibility, and Smith, who is associated with the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship, offer a guide to corporate citizenship that explains how to leverage the tools, trends, and assets of business to drive results, value chain resiliency, productivity, innovation, long-term shareholder value, and benefit for the community. They outline practices and checklists that help companies ensure they are considering environmental, social, and governance impacts and assets to create competitive advantage for the company, as well as a better world. They explain what corporate citizenship is; connecting it to business purpose and strategy, creating advantage in the marketplace, the role of people like consumers and employees, and setting up and organizing a corporate citizenship program; the importance of the supply chain and procurement function, creating a more sustainable operation, and defining and managing the corporate giving program; and getting the message across and building on success.

From the Author
We have always had a strong belief that the science and art of corporatecitizenship are fundamental to differentiated business success. This has played out in our personal careers and in thecareers and companies we've had the opportunity to influence. Aswe started to talk about the need for a "how to" book thataddresses the fundamentals of corporate citizenship practice, werealized that the two of us had, between us, almost 60 years ofexperience working in some dimension of corporate citizenship.Though Dave started in environmental health and safety managementand Katherine in philanthropy, both of our career paths convergedat the intersection of those disciplines and corporatecitizenship strategy. As a team, we drafted this book to provide aresource for those in the field -- whether you are just starting out,are a more experienced corporate citizenship professional who isrethinking all or part of your corporate citizenship program, or aCEO seeking to get the best out of your corporate citizenshipteam. We hope you will use this book as a helpful desk resourcethat can help you think through the solutions that create the mostvalue for your company, your shareowners, and for society.
