There have been dozens of poorly researched books written about the White nationalist movement in America, and "White Power, White Pride!" is the only exception. The other books are not objective and they just repeat the semi-truths and outright falsehoods that circulate in the controlled news media rather than doing original research, which is what Dobratz and Shanks-Meile did.
This book is primarily descriptive. It tells the history of the "movement" and describes today's major groups and leaders, who they are, what they believe, and what they do. The authors give an unbiased account of the FBI's and AFT's wars against Whites -- Gordon Kahl, Ruby Ridge, and Bob Matthew's Silent Brotherhood -- as well as the FBI's illegal and underhanded war against the Klan and other White groups.
It does have a few dry parts where these two professors describe how the movement fits into Sociology's theories. Dobratz and Shanks-Meile don't seem to understand that the White movement is a biological struggle for survival and not a sociological movement.
Nevertheless (from my perspective as someone in the "movement"), I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the White movement. There is a wealth of interesting material in here for journalists, and no newsroom should be without a copy.

I am an African American and I must say that I am impressed by what I read. The structure of the book was good and the readability helps you along in most areas. I particularly enjoyed the sections that quoted actual members of the various organizations. This book will be one of the "Standard" books you will judge other works on.

The book does a great job at explaining the divisions within the movement. We see the structures of the skin heads, kkk, kkkk, Christian identity and other influentual white groups in America. The book discusses the movements leaders and interaction with other seperatist groups and racial groups. I was shocked to see how much selfishness, ego's and fanatical religious beliefs have stopped the movement from reaching its full potential. It would seem members themselves more than the government have stunted its growth.

I was very cautious in the beginning because the authors seemed like they were advocates for the movements and had subtle sympathy. This made me a little cautious because they clamed to not have a bias opinion from the start, but this relative tension only lasted the first couple of chapters. Other then that it was a pretty good read.

Dobratz & Shanks-Meile have taken an in-depth and responsible approach to a largely misunderstood phenomenon. "White Power, White Pride!" offers insights which similar works have failed to provide due to lack of objectivity or sloppy research. The authors deal with their subject as conscientious professionals. The key to dealing with a problem is to properly understand a problem. The White Separatist Movement in United States: White Power White Pride is a very fair book written by two Left wing feminists who try very hard to keep their feeling of hate and disgust for us out of the book, and they do a very good job.
This is a well researched book. These ladies spent a lot of money and time traveling America to talk to many people in the movement. They did not just rehash some old ADL reports like most reporters do, and the book is proof of their hard work. This is a fresh look at the movement through the eyes of two Left wing Eggheads. To show you how far to the Left they are, in the back of the book they called the super liberal rag The New Republic a right wing publication. I got a real kick out of that.
This is a great book for an overview of the race movement in America. A lot of good info and most of it is correct, at least from their worldview of us.
These ladies interviewed me last summer for a book on Odinism they are planning to write. I don't know what they're going to call it. Also, a man named Mardell is coming out with a book on Asatru called the Gods of Blood. Which will be coming out soon.

After being quite interested in this movement for quite some time, this book proved to be truly informative and well researched. It was quite refreshing to read an unbiased, unslanted, account of these people and their beliefs. The further realization that the majority of the members of these organizations are not just crazed, uneducated, rednecks was also extremely refreshing.
