This book thankfully did not pander to my sense of mystery and desire for any diluted movie monsters that might spring out of the shadows after some silly coeds seeking a thrill ride into one of Russia’s worst historical disasters. Instead the author managed to convey the truly sad and tragic tale of Chernobyl by highlighting the plight of those who had to deal with the aftermath. While the presence of violence and rape within the book is a bit disturbing, it is kept to a level that allows it to remain an integral part of the book without detracting from the story at all.
After reading just a bit about the characters I found myself staying up later and later just to devour each page as my eyes went on and one without cease. Considering that I read this book in a weekend it is an amazing story and one that I would gladly recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy a wonderful tale with deep, heartfelt characters and a powerful feel that might just hook you after the first few pages. Good book, great author.
I remember it well because I was twenty-years-old and living on the European continent at the time. The Chernobyl disaster was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history in terms of cost and casualties. It is one of only two classified as a level 7 event (the maximum classification) on the International Nuclear Event Scale, the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011.
This historical fiction novel is based on historical fact. 23 Minutes Past 1 A.M is a powerful and in-depth fictional story based on true events relating to the horrific disaster that occurred in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine. The author does an excellent job blending this graphic story into what could only be described as a global nightmare at the time.
Very few things rattle my cage these days, but readers should be warned that this work contains graphic scenes of rape and violence. However, the book is very well written and the story flows from scene to scene effortlessly. The author shows, in my opinion, an exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling.
The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, (although at times I wished I wasn’t). Nevertheless, that's something I really look for in a good book.
This was a captivating and commendable work that had me immersed from the beginning. It’s my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed. It’s one of those stories that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. However, this is a lengthy read that took several sittings to finish. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and satisfaction for the reader!
I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Robert J Dornan in the future! I would definitely recommend this book! Five stars from me.
One of my favorite lines from this story. “Whatever you are told is the truth may be the truth to the one who spoke it, but not necessarily true.” And also “The truth is what you believe, and it defines you… until you pick up a new book.” This story centers around the nuclear accident at Chernobyle. The character that I liked the least was Valari Markov he was a very demented and sick minded man. The very best part of the story was the surprise ending. I never saw it coming. Robert Dornan has a unique talent to keep the reader guessing and has spun a tale worth a second reading. Another few lines that I really liked about the story. “Despair is when you wake up in the morning knowing your life will never change. It is the anguish of realizing that your life is a blank canvas of nothingness. Once despair takes over your spirit you become an easy vessel for people that wish to control you.” Valari and his partner “Chipmunk” Stani Pilon are villains who profit from the disaster. The character who I liked most was Mila Kharmalov and her sister. They were the heroes. I know that the author did his homework the story showed many of the important details of the accident. Well written and very well done. I have rated the story a solid 5 stars. I would enjoy reading more of the works by Robert Dornan.
