25 Years Of Grace: An Anniversary Tribute to Jeff Buckley's Classic Album Hardcover – October 31, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
In the wake of his passing, Buckley has continued to garner new fans and influence countless artists. And while a number of posthumous releases of unpolished, deep cuts have helped satiate listeners over the years, it is his official studio album Grace that reverberates with timelessness: at its release in 1994, the album sounded like nothing that had come before—and no album has repeated its essence since.
Photographer Merri Cyr was there along the way. She has documented Buckley’s career from his days at the East Village coffee shop Sin-é to his iconic Grace cover shoot to his rigorous tour around the world as he promoted his unprecedented debut. In 25 Years of Grace, Cyr joins forces with Jeff Buckley biographer Jeff Apter (A Pure Drop: The Life of Jeff Buckley) to produce an illustrated tribute to this classic album in celebration of its twenty-fifth anniversary.
The book features brand new interviews with Buckley insiders—Matt Johnson, Mick Grøndahl, Michael Tighe, Gary Lucas, Karl Berger, Andy Wallace, George Stein, Steve Berkowitz, and others—revealing the details about Buckley’s signing to a major label, the role of the band in creating arrangements, finding the right creative direction for the multifaceted songsmith, the songwriting process and final song selections, key meetings and collaborations, recording techniques, memorable moments in the studio, and more. The book also includes reflections about Buckley and Grace from an array of music artists—Butch Walker, Pete Yorn, Jimmy Gnecco, Glen Hansard, Holly Miranda, and Lenny Kaye, to name a few. Lavishly illustrated with many never-before-seen photographs, 25 Years of Grace takes a fresh look at the making and legacy of this classic album.

George SteinGeorge Stein has been an attorney specializing in entertainment law in New York City since 1976. Acting as attorney and manager, Stein negotiated Jeff Buckley’s recording contract with Columbia Records and guided Buckley during his career. He is also an adjunct professor at New York University and lectures throughout the U.S. JA: How did you react when you heard the finished version of Grace? GS: I thought Jeff said everything he wanted to say on Grace. I thought it was a complicated and impressive record. You had to digest this record, absorb it. I think its critical success surprised everybody. In terms of what we wanted to accomplish, to put him on the map in the best way possible, well, it was the perfect record. A wonderful record that wasn’t obviously commercial. |
Michael TigheNew Yorker Michael Tighe was a friend of Jeff Buckley’s before he joined the band, as guitarist, after the Grace sessions—Michael was an actor at the time. He remained in the band, and stayed close with Buckley, until Buckley’s death in 1997. JA: Why do you think Grace has become such an influential record? MT: I think the album has such lasting power because of “Hallelujah.” I think Jeff was born to sing that song and that his version will resonate with people forever. Jeff’s singing was so focused and pure when he made Grace, and in every moment on the album he is going for it all the way. It’s like one of the ultimate “serenade” albums of all time. The song I go back to most is “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over.” I think that’s Jeff at his best as a songwriter—I just love the groove and arc of that song. |
Chris DowdChris Dowd was a founding member and was in the original lineup of the band Fishbone. He and Buckley were close friends and roommates. JA: How do you best remember Jeff? CD: I can tell you what he was to me and what he stood for. How he had no filter, which was both hilarious and priceless. And rare. He had no agenda—he was air and earth unfettered! Tell me, how many people in your life you have known like that, that still have a childlike innocence? A Zen-like understanding of human beings. And a heart as big as a whale. |
Clif NorrellLos Angeles–based recording engineer, mixer, and record producer Clif Norrell has worked with Bruce Springsteen, Sting, R.E.M., Faith No More, and Rush. With his help, especially on the track “Dream Brother,” Grace was finally completed in early 1994. JA: What was your overall response to Grace when it was released? Do you think it was a fair representation of Jeff and his music at that point in time? Is it an album that you still revisit? CN: Grace is one of my all-time favorite albums, and not just because I was personally involved. Besides just the sheer beauty in the music and vocals, what I really love is the variety of styles and the journey that it takes you on. I am still inspired by the songs and the performances on the album, and I know that several other artists I have worked with are too. I think that it’s an excellent representation of where he was musically at that point. I am pretty sure that Jeff would agree. |

The second section felt very much like filler to pad the book out. The interviews provide very little insight into Jeff. The majority of interviewees never met him and are simply discussing how he inspired their career.
The photos are great and it would make an excellent coffee table book. However, If you’re purchasing this hoping to find new information on Jeff and the making of Grace then look elsewhere.
