This has got to be one of the best big band CD's I've ever heard. The arrangements are top-notch. "Imagination" has Guido Basso soloing on an absolutely beautiful rendition of this tune. 4 B.C. (Benny Carter)opens the CD in a medium tempo groover and then "Imagination" is the second cut. Later is "nightfall" and "My Bells". These are gorgeous ballads with flutes in the mix. This CD is so nice. I own about 5 cd's of Rob Mcconnell's. They're all good but this one is unbelievably satisfying. As all good music, it gets better with repeated listenings. If you like a large orchestra do yourself a favor and get this.

- - and relax on a beautiful Saturday afternoon........

But that's very difficult to do with Rob McConnell and his Canadian band SWINGING on the stereo....

Was unfamiliar with them until I read some item (Mel Torme' wrote it) lauding this big band - - - - and, YES ----- right!

Finally in a mood to get away from small groups and Bossa Nova for a day or three -- found the right vehicle. Tight charts, fine personnel = Excellent band!

There have been so many excellent recordings from Rob McConnell, it almost seems redundant to heap more praise on the litany.

However, several things are unusual and interesting about this one: first, it's an unusually large group (far beyond the 'jive five' style); second, the playing seems far more modern than many, spreading easily and naturally from swing into post-bebop style, without losing the feeling of easy grace that typifies modern swing recordings; and finally, both the recording and the playing are so persistently ingratiating, this is a recording that definitely and dramatically improves with repeated listenings.

Highly recommended!

Just like all the other Rob McConnell works have great arrangements and tight well done solos and swing aggressively and also can be reflective.
