If you are looking for a book that is rich in technical details and radial engine history, this book is unsurpassed. Well worth the cost. Graham White knows how to write about engines...

I've been thrilled to be behind this engine a time over two. :-) The author blends the technical with the story so well. I've actually bought, read and sold this book a few times. Each time I find something I missed before. The author's book on the R-4360 is as good or better. Vee's for Victory -by another author- does for the Allison V-1710 what Mr White does for the R-2800 .... and R-4360 . Now if Mr White would do a book on the Merlin ?? Are you listening Mr White?

The paperback is a photocopy of the hardback. The illustration a little hard to read and it overall has the copied feel to it. It also is missing some key parts. There are colored illustrations that have numbers to them. The paperback doesn't have the key to these numbers, but the hardback does.
The subject is very well covered, but the paperback version of it isn't the best. If you want this book buy the hardback version. It's a lot more expensive, but you'll be glad you did. I was able to give my paperback version to a aviation friend who liked it very much.

This was a gift for my father-in-law. My husband started reading it before it was wrapped - I had a hard time getting the book from him! My father-in-law loves the book! He points out illustrations and shows how the engine works. It is a fantastic book for a mechanic and airplane enthusiast.

The R-2800 was used in the Corsair, Hellcat and finally the Bearcat. This engine helped the U.S. Navy bury the air forces of the Empire of Japan and played a significantly important and otherwise unheralded part. It contains the details of engineering history you will get nowhere else.

... if the author had spent more time covering those awesome P+W designed superchargers that came with the engines. It's the superchargers that explain why R2800 powered fighters had such large flight envelope advantages over their 1944-45 2000 hp Japanese counterparts (well, that and higher fuel octane).
An efficient, RELIABLE, two speed two stage supercharger in a planetary configuration? That was a MAJOR accomplishment -- especially when one considers that P+W pulled the whole thing off internally without anything to copy or improve on and without any outside help.
IMHO way too many words have been written about the Merlin supercharger while history practically ignores the equally impressive P+W effort. [deep breath].
end of review and rant.
