The major detraction was that it still needed some editing. There are grammar and punctuation errors, some of them rather major, and these distracted from the story. That may not bother some people as much as it bothers others, but the lack of good editing has been a problem in this series, especially the last two books. It seems a shame to write such a long saga with a huge following, then release the final few books with blatant errors.
I liked the story and how it developed, how the characters grew into the roles they were called to fill, how some turned to the Dark Side, and especially how reconciliation was emphasized in the end. I recommend the series to lovers of this genre, but with the caveat that you will be encountering some rough edges in the editing department.
I know several people who were 'awakened' to the idea of prepping, and the potential for an economic and subsequently political collapse of the US, by reading this series - some of whom were helped on their way by my recommendation. If you're interested in this at all, start with volume one - it is not one of those series where each book is can be read as a standalone novel.
There are also a number of additional books, written by other authors, but set in the 299 Days 'universe' that are interesting explorations of other aspects of the broader story, and worth reading in their own right.
Overall, I give this series a very strong 'buy' recommendation.
First, lets get this out of the way: Glenn is not an author by trade, and it shows. The writing was clunky early on, however, he got MUCH better as the series went on. The books are also too short in my opinion, and I'd rather have them all in one large book if I had the choice. Both of these things do not warrant a lower rating in my opinion though.
Great content though. Really excellent. Gives the reader a lot to think about. How would you handle a situation like this?
Lots of good, detailed, realistic info in these books. It'll definitely get you thinking about your emergency plans and survival skills.
I hope Glenn writes more books likes this with new stories. This Series would also make an excellent movie!
I will not give any spoilers; because of that there is little I can say regarding the plot or characters. There were definitely a few surprise twists from where Book 8 left off, but not many regarding the overarching plot. He did a great job of tying up many loose ends and character story lines. I really appreciate Glen Tate's writing decision as to which character in the story he gave the final word in the book. Perfect. If you have already gotten this far in your reading, you really need to pony up a few more bucks and read this series to it's closure. The planned Book 10 as I understand it will be more of a wrap up, but Book 9 can easily serve in itself as a final conclusion to the series.
If there is an eventual collapse, I pray to God it is only a partial one like this story line foresees.
