Game Of The Year- this is what a game should be.
5 Stars
Game Of The Year- this is what a game should be.
One of the best games in years. Good to great on nearly every level. Story looks and game play. It involves you. Unlike the normal game where you are simply shooting everything in site you are discovering a new wonderful and at the same time horrible world. You can see what the people once were before the fall and and you get a all to rare relief from the normal shoot reload and shoot. Not that the normal FPS is not fun but here you can see so much more. It is going to be a game that nearly all other computer made after this get compared to like it or not. It is that good. This game would normaly be " not my kind of game" But it won me over anyway and then some. There are very few game review sites that have less than a 9/10 rating for this game. This is an achievement by itself. HL2 and Doom3 did not do this. . Just about everything was done well it runs smoothly, even with all the eye candy, from beginning to end. There is not one thing that stands out but the way it all comes together smoothly is unheard of. It is very immersive. It might not make it to the total GOTY with the stiff competition but I am sure it will make many lists even if they need to create a new category to let it win. Looks better than FEAR and Far Cry even without a killer system as long as it meeds the minimum.Cons: It ends.Other: You will need a video card that supports SM3.0 older cards like the ATI 9600 x800 series use SM2 so wont work. Some people are upset that it requires you to go on line for copyright protection(DRM) but no one has had issues after the first few days when 2k's customer service and their server was overwhelmed by the response.

Let me start by saying that Bioshock is one of the best and most atmospheric games I've ever played (and I've seen a lot in my time). I can't really put into words the experience that the player is presented with here.

However, as good a game as it is, it took me five days following Bioshock's arrival at my house to get it to install. There was just one problem: the automatic updater requires that ALL firewalls be shut down during the installation; unfortunately, it doesn't say this outright and the installer quits if it can't update Bioshock. I was aware that many other people had this serious problem, so I wanted to see if I can spread the word better on how to install Bioshock without interruptions. To get Bioshock installed, here's what you must do:

1. You have to have a wireless connection. Make it a strong one so you don't leave anything to chance.

2. After the initial Bioshock files have been installed, this is where I had trouble. You must make sure that ALL FIREWALLS ARE SHUT DOWN. This includes Windows Firewalls, Norton or McAfee scanners/firewalls, and even built-in firewalls for modem-based security (i.e: OpenDNS. Fortunately these kinds of firewalls aren't that common.)

3. Install and enjoy the game! Be sure to turn all firewalls back on for your own security. On a final note, DON'T INSTALL THE "v.1.1" UPDATE FOR THE RETAIL VERSION OF BIOSHOCK!!! It just crashes the game on the loading screens and you have to wait another hour doing a clean re-installation of the program. As far as I can tell, the game works fine without the 1.1 patch; however, if you're picky about it, I recommend buying Bioshock from Steam (but you'll get it cheaper on Amazon, and there's not much difference between the 1.0 and 1.1 Bioshocks.) Hope this helps!

I already owned this game but my original copy developed a crack in the CD and would no longer play. I realize this may not be a newer game but if you want to get the most out of it you really need a newer high end computer with a good graphics card...I do. The story is kinda dark but the graphics are incredible if you can max them out. I have read in other reviews other than at Amazon that you play the game once and you won't want to play it again...I don't agree. I have enjoyed playing this game over and over again. It is very easy to become deeply involved in the city of Rapture. No spoiler here but there are multiple endings depending on your decisions in the game and it is very easy to miss hidden areas on the map so look everywhere. Don't let the bad guys scare you, just make sure to move slowly so you won't run into an ambush and be overwhelmed by so many bad guys that you run out of ammo and health before you can take them all out. Be ready to back track at any time to pick up ammo or health that you had passed up early on in a level if you run low...it will still be there. You will need internet access because the game patches itself after install on the first time run. I have read complaints about this in other reviews but I had no problems with this. The game has been flawless with never a crash or a stutter on my computer.

This is an incredible game with stunning graphics, sound, and playability. Multiple difficulty levels, ability to save anywhere in the game, a cool story, sets and characters.

However, even though my system met or exceeded all the requirements, I could not play the game when I installed it.

I had onboard sound and a GeForce 7600 GS, but neither of these could handle the game. I upgraded to a SoundBlaster Xtreme Gamer and a GeForce 7950 GT, and now the game screams; but it cost me $300 to get there. :( Still, it has a memory leak somewhere and locks up randomly. A good idea is to stop every so often and reboot.

It takes FOREVER to load (seriously, like 3 or 4 MINUTES), but once loaded, you can play for a long time before you need to load again.

I know there are people out there who are afraid of SecuROM, but it hasn't given me any trouble that I know of.

So if you think your PC can handle it, you will most likely enjoy it.

I almost didn't make this purchase, after reading so many negative reviews associated with buying this product used. Many reviewers have noted difficulties installing, running on Windows7, etc... Granted, some time has gone by since most of those reviews were posted, so perhaps some of the technical issues with installing this product have been patched. The price was right so I took a flyer and bought a used copy, half expecting to get burned.

I had no problems installing (note: an internet connection is required to install), and I bought from a vendor who advertised that the code key was included. I did have an issue with the sound cutting out (hence 4 stars), but an online search took me quickly to information showing that I needed to change a setting in my Device Manager. Once that was addressed I had no issues playing the game.

The game itself was a blast. Beautiful graphics, but the sounds and voice acting are what really made this game so enjoyably creepy.

4.0 out of 5 stars
