Editorial Reviews

Born in 1837 at Rosnay, Théodore Dubois was the son of a schoolteacher in the region of Rheims. He died in Paris in 1924. At an early age he entered the Conservatoire de Musique de Paris, where he was a pupil of Marmontel for piano and of Ambroise Thomas for fugue and composition. He obtained a First Prize for organ in 1859. Although he is one of the lesser-known French composers, he left a great many works including operas, one ballet, symphonic music, piano & organ pieces, and chamber music.

The odds are that if you have found this CD, you already know and like the music of Theodore Dubois, and do not need to be persuaded to buy this. If you are wondering about Dubois, know that he is considered a minor composer, "conservative" in his day, but that at times he attained greatness with e.g. "The Seven Last Words of Christ."

These pre-Vatican II Masses, like those written by Alexandre Guilmant and Pietro Yon and others, were composed with amateur parish choirs in mind. Dubois was excellent in composing tuneful, expressive music for the pre-Vatican II Mass. The Mass in F and the "Little Mass for the Dead" are the strongest of the three, although the Missa Brevis is fine also. These works will remind one of the days before "gee-tar" Masses and before the boring, at times incompetently composed songs being used today: and if you do not recall those days, you can hear what you missed!

The two settings of the Ave Maria are not particularly memorable, but that is easily counterbalanced by the inclusion of an Adoramus Te from The Seven Last Words of Christ. ( The same label - BNL - has recorded an orchestral version of that work: buy it, if you can find it!)

Fine performance of some very fine works! Buy it today before it goes out-of-print!

(It would be nice to have recordings of Masses by Yon and Guilmant!)
