Once installed, my computer could detect my wireless signal, but it wouldn't connect. It would connect to the router, but then fail to connect to the internet, then after 30 seconds or so, would drop the signal from the router and have to reaquire it. When trying to use Windows to troubleshoot, the computer would throw up multiple error messages, the most common being "Computer couldn't not connect to the hidden network 'Network Name'". My network is not hidden. Sometimes it would connect to the network, then after a few minutes display that it was connected to the internet, only when I opened a browser it would fail to load any web pages. Eventually (after a minute or so) it would again drop the connection. One time when it was briefly showing a connection to the internet I pinged "Google" to test the connection. 3 lost packets, one packet returned in 475mls. Basically it seemed the card was failing to pick up the signal properly. I should note that the computer was about 10 feet away from the router, tops.
After trying several things, including a streach thinking it may be a problem with my router and restarting the computer several times, it eventually managed to connect and bring up the front page of Google after giving it about 2 minutes of time to try loading. I thought adjusting the location of the antanae might help and so reached down to gently reposition them, only to have the card spring into action. Suddenly pages were loading swiftly and smoothly. I used the card for a few minutes and though that perhaps what had happened was it wasn't sitting snugly in the port, so I shut down the computer, opened the panel and checked to be sure the card was fully inserted into the slot. It was. However, when I restarted, once again, my computer totally failed to connect to the wireless access point and hasn't since then.
In short, the card is severely defective. I have returned the item and ordered a different, slightly more expensive wireless card. No more budget items for me. It's not worth the hassle.
The range in my house is fine - I am able to connect to the wireless router which is downstairs in the front of the house to the office on the 2nd floor towards the middle of the house with a strong signal (4 bars). At work the signal was not as strong (only 2 bars) but I did not notice any decrease in performance with the weaker signal. Overall I am happy with the purchase - it is doing what I need it to do and the price was definitely worth it.
If I had to complain about anything it would be the instructions that came with the card. It is completely diagrams - there is no text describing what the instruction steps are. The images are very small so it was a little confusing as to what they were trying to communicate. Fortunately I have some experience installing hardware so I followed my gut and everything worked out. I did not have the same issues that other users were reporting about multiple drivers/ software on the disk. For me there was only one executable program that installed the software and drivers.
I would recommend this product to other users. Based on my experience I would advise users who experience problems to not give up immediately. If I encounter any additional issues I will attempt to update my review.
