Wok Star is a cooperative real-time game where players take on different roles to help grow a Chinese restaurant in a tycoon style game. The clientele of customers is represented by a deck of cards with various Chinese dishes on them. Customers are served one at a time while a 20-second sand timer is running. If they are not served in time, they eat free. Each order requires a combination of ingredients to make. The board is used for tracking the levels of ten prepared ingredients in the kitchen. To prepare more ingredients, players spend dice in different combinations. All players are in charge of different tasks and all working simultaneously because the timer is running! At the end of each round, players pool their money and invest in different options to grow their business: new recipes, upgrade preparation cards, or advertise to get more customers. The players must have a certain level of profit by the last round to keep the restaurant open and win!

Unlike most reviews, I don't have a problem with the audio volume from my timer. Mine is loud and clear. I wish that it sped up to give you an audio clue on the last 5 or 10 seconds but that's just how the game is played.
The hectic back and forth with ingredients required for an item on the menu, are you short of ingredients, and what's the best dice combo to purchase ingredients while also being mindful of the "tip" bonus is a lot to take in when you're first playing the game. Even the 30 second timer can feel like a short time when you're on the clock.
Overall, I'm excited to have the game and I can't wait to play it in a party environment.
Because dice are rolled at the start of a round and then the same dice are used to serve several customers there isn't as much tension here as in something like Escape or Space Cadets. After a couple rounds we found several gaps where both timers were still running and we could produce our most in-demand ingredients.
That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, there was still enough tension there to make it interesting. Which it actually needs to make it interesting because strip away the timers (which we did for our first, practice round) and there's not much there. It's just assigning dice to the needed cards.
It is also a bit of an optimization puzzle. In the final round we lost by 1 single dollar when if we had done the math a little better and made enough ingredients to make one additional dish we would have won. This seems to make for a pretty well-balanced game and I wouldn't mind playing it very occasionally.
I do wonder if some of the jokes are too insensitive though. I'm not of Asian lineage but those who are might take offense to a card such as "Free Meat" that gives you 2 chicken or pork but depicts a dog and cat on the card...
