You can feel the sturdiness of the metal frame, even in how heavy the machine is to lift and carry. Compared to my other machine, it's quite a challenge to heft around to sew. That being said, this construction doesn't necessarily mean more power when it comes to the actual sewing. When I was sewing an e-reader cover, for example, it had trouble sewing through the thicknesses, and I grabbed my other machine to work with, and had no trouble using it.
This machine has nothing digital about it--it's very old-fashioned in that way. There are some positives to that, especially for beginners, and without there being electronics, there's less to break or drive you batty. As an example, my other sewing machine (NOT this one) makes error beeps when I make a setting mistake, and refuses to sew. So I often end up spending some time trying to figure out what I have set wrong. You can't really mess up like that with this type of machine.
I also like how I can turn it off, and since it's dial-based, it will retain whatever stitch it's set to. With my electronic machine, I have to start stitch setup over from scratch after I turn it off.
I would consider this a decent machine for a beginning sewer/occasional crafter who isn't going to do a lot of major or fancy sewing or a lot of buttons. The simplicity of the controls can be a positive to someone who doesn't want to do a lot of extra things. This is also the first machine I've ever used with a needle-threading function. That's so nice when your eyes are growing weary from a lot of sewing, or for older crafters. It takes a bit of fiddling to figure it out, but it's a very handy feature that's easy to learn.
My sewing machine didn't come with an English manual (just Spanish) or quick start guide. I looked everywhere and was careful not to throw anything away (This is something worth mentioning, as the foot pedal/power cord combo is hidden in the back of the Styrofoam and easy to miss.). Their website download link led to a 404 error page and, as of this writing, has since been removed. I e-mailed, then later called customer service and over the phone was told such things as that the machine didn't exist, I was giving the wrong product number (I wasn't), and that possibly the Spanish manual was only Spanish for three pages (it's all Spanish). They eventually agreed to ship me a manual, but not a quick start guide. I had it within about 1 1/2 weeks. Hopefully this will be resolved for others, but I wanted to encourage people to call customer service if you get the wrong manual. It's so important to have a print manual for a sewing machine, especially if you want to do things like making buttonholes.
This is the first machine I've used where the thread sits sideways. I don't mind that at all--but you have to put a spool cap on it to keep it from coming off, and it would be very easy to misplace it, especially if you're switching thread colors a lot. With most machines, there's no added part to keep track of. This does have an optional other way of feeding thread, as well.
The cover for the machine is made of the paper-y fabric similar to what you see in reusable shopping bags, so one of your first sewing projects may be making a different cover to protect your machine. :)
In summary, this is a decent machine. I think beginners would appreciate the simplicity of the controls. It's a good beginner machine without a lot of bells and whistles that may only serve to confuse you and complicate things in the beginning. For those who are more experienced or are hoping to do heavy-duty larger projects, a different machine might be a better option.
