In this latest treatise, leadership mega-guru Maxwell (The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership) taps a rich vein of corporate angst: the plight of the middle manager, saddled with responsibilities but lacking real power, torn by conflicting tasks and time-management dilemmas, seething with thwarted ambition. As Macbeth shows, it's a predicament fraught with tragic potential, but the staid, platitudinous treatment given it by Maxwell and ghostwriter Charlie Wetzel drains away the drama. They generally counsel acceptance of limitations. Maxwell tells middle managers to work diligently in subordinate positions, support the CEO's vision, find the good in incompetent or malevolent leaders, infiltrate their bosses' emotional lives ("Listen to your leader's heartbeat.... What makes them laugh?... Cry?.... Sing?") and "stand up for your leader whenever you can." They can thus exert an unsung but crucial "influence" over higherups, while themselves practicing a higher, sublimated form of leadership by selflessly nurturing the potential of their own colleagues and underlings. Unfortunately, Maxwell's practical advice boils down to vague truisms ("when you find a problem, provide a solution") or clichés ("If your boss is a golfer, you may want to take up the game"). His bland injunctions to resignation, patience and self-effacement are unobjectionable, but also uninspiring. (Jan. 10)

Well intentioned but not worth buying

This book had been recommended and appeared to have a good reviews so I purchased. I was very disappointed.First of all, the content is light. This would have been a decent magazine article but Maxwell stretches it out by repeating things over and over and writing shout-outs to all his friends and colleagues. Secondly, the material is very cliched. Lastly, I just disagree with a lot of the suggestions, particularly about taking up your boss' hobbies so you can converse more meaningfully with him. Full disclosure - I stopped reading after about 60% (obviously I'm reading on Kindle) because it was no longer a valuable use of my time. Maybe it gets better toward the end....

Yes, buy into the hype. It's worth it.

At first, I wasn't sure I should buy into the hype of this book but I'm really glad I did. I attended a seminar that highlighted the points of this book and I was excited to read it. I have been reading it and have been applying some of the "advice" to my daily life. Now, I'm not for buying or reading books with nothing but common sense. This book is nothing like that. Yes, it has some common sense factors, but it also has a different way to view your life and the things that are outside of your control. It allows you to use different techniques to have a better outcome whether you're a supervisor, employee, or anything else. This book is for everyone. If you are wanting to be a better you or how to become a leader/better leader, this book is great.

The 360 Degree Leader has some valuable insight into leadership from anywhere in any organization. Let's face it, even on the bottom we aren't alone and leading at the bottom is still leading. Everyone, everywhere has an opportunity to influence and lead others and doing so may all the difference in the lives of those around us.

Have you ever been "downsized" or found yourself starting over in the work world? Having been a leader in both the non profit area and in business, I've found it tough to have to start over. I find the 360 Degree Leader to be valuable in facing the re-start with dignity and purpose.

If you want to increase your value to your organization, and co-workers, take a look through The 360 Degree Leader. Internalizing even one component of Maxwell's leadership strategies will affect great change.

If you like a checklist of what to do, which may seem obvious, but then you also need sub bullets for each checlist item which extrapolates on the rationale or provide an example of an interpersonal skill you might employ, this is the book for you. If you have done any managing of people or, in the situation as my husband who has been an executive for 40 years, and have had children and worked on committees and in the corporate world, then you will find this book not just trite and dumbed-down but also redundant. If you are a young person starting the work world and wanting to have a guide book of potential situations you MAY encounter, especially those related to office gossip, then this is the book for you. Anyone over 40 need not read it. Go to the bookstore and copy the last summary page of every chapter. I often read passages to my husband for comedic relief during my leadership class (graduate school leadership course, book selected by professor, aimed at young professionals wanting to move up the corporate ladder).

Great book for developing potential, kindle version is great.

Quick download from Amazon, to my kindle devices. The text downloaded quickly, and is easy to use on multiple devices that I have. I was able to have the text available on my kindle, my ipad, and my iphone. There is a great bookmarking function that stores all my highlights as well. When highlighting there are options to choose from four different colors. The text also let's you know what percentage of the text has been written. This is a great book from John C. Maxwell. It has a lot of great information for the person who has a desire to lead, but is caught in the middle of an organization. There are ways that you can be that go to person and noticed for your leadership strengths while contributing greatly to your organization or company. I would highly recommend this text. John C. Maxwell does not dissappoint with the 360 degree leader.
