3D printing materials and filament are used to build parts and prototypes through the fused-filament fabrication process. Supplied on a spool or in a cartridge, 3D printing filament and pen refills are extruded through a printer nozzle and are stacked layer upon layer to construct the three-dimensional design. It comes in either 1.75 or 3 mm diameters to match the machine's extruder size. Common materials include PLA and ABS. PLA is a strong plant-based polymer that is naturally transparent, can be colored and made opaque easily, and is more rigid than ABS. ABS is a strong polymer that has better flexibility and also offers better temperature resistance. Several other material types exist, as well as composites with materials such as metal and brick. Most 3D printing materials and supplies such as filament are packaged in solid form and then melted through the extrusion process; however, some are liquids applied to the print after it has formed, such as fluids like limonene that dissolve structural support materials. 3D printer resin is also available to create new composites for a range of properties, including increased durability and easier material removal.
