When I first saw it, it appeared to be a quite clever and ingenious design. Conclusion after using it: A good idea gone horribly wrong. 1) It is difficult if not impossible to get a tight fit on sandpaper. 2) if you attempt to sand two pieces of wood attached at a 90 degree angle, the one not being sanded ends up with black marks running parallel to the edge being sanded. I applaud the effort to recycle tires however this particular application is ill conceived. I really am surprised that this product made it to market. It begs the question - was this ever actually tested? One more item for the landfill.

These 3M sanding blocks are easy to use, comfortably shaped, use sandpaper efficiently. They do have one annoying flaw, however. They will mark your workpiece black if the rubber body rubs directly on the workpiece, such as when sanding along a corner. you must use the short end in corners to prevent this. Given their price, about 1/3 of the cost in retail stores, a bit of caution is worth the difference. By the way, the more expensive black sanding blocks do the same thing.

Not Quite The Same As Fifty Years Ago

I have two of these sanding blocks from when I first got into woodworking some fifty years ago and they're starting to crack from age and use. In addition to using these with sandpaper held between the flaps I use them with PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) sandpaper to avoid the wasted paper under the flap. I also use them with drywall sanding screens with the screen extending out the sides to avoid sanding lines. They have a nice feel in the hand and I keep two with 120/220 grit paper handy. Unfortunately, the quality of the new blocks is not the same as my older ones. The flap doesn't come down on the paper as tightly and the pins are loose and tend not to secure the paper. So, while the new one will work it is not as good as my old ones. I didn't notice any weird smell that others have mentioned.

Not worth saving about $10 vs. "orange" block

The "orange" 3M block we have is too rounded at the edges, after many hours of use, to suit my purposes. But the "orange" one costs about $10 more, here. And i'm now okay with spending the extra $10, bcuz this one...
This black rubber is a more "brittle" type than the orange. It chips easily; if you accidentally rub an exposed part of it on your working surface, removing the black smear(s) is an arduous maddening process. And then there's the pitting created from:
The blocks received had/have tiny metal filings embedded throughout the flat surface. Estimated size ~ a 100-grit grain. Removing them pits the rubber surface. Leaving them in risks that they'll poke through & scratch with with high grit number/thin backing paper. So, i'll only use this block for up to 150 grit, and i'm getting an "orange" block for using any finer grit.

Edit: I say "blocks", above. I only ordered 1. A 2nd was replacement bcuz 1st arrived with all 4 corners & both edges chipped, along with the metal embedded in surface. The replacement only 1 corner chipped + the metal in surface. I suspect chipping is bcuz only packaging is a padded envelope, the item is just bare with a cardboard label inserted as a sheet of sandpaper would be. The metal had to be embedded somewhere between/during fabrication and shipping, a failure to remove these metal bits from wherever to prevent them contaminating the product.

For a sanding block, it does the job. The size of the block works great for standard sized rolls of sandpaper. The standard sandpaper rolls SLIGHTLY overhang on the sides of the sanding block, which is great so that you can get into corners. The bottom of the block also has a EXTREMELY SLIGHT arc to it so that the front and back of the block create a little more friction on the sanding surface. It's also a hard durable rubber (or at least that's what I think it is), so it's softer to hold onto that a piece of wood, and it seems like it would last a long time. Lastly, it has "teeth" on both sides of the sanding block that grab onto the sandpaper. That's really nice. Then you don't even need to worry about using the sticky back of sandpaper. The sandpaper holds really well.

The 3M sanding block is what you'd assume. For me, it's all about the weight. The rubber block has a great weight to it so that you don't really have to work as hard when removing body paint in my case. With the proper sandpaper and block your job should be relatively easy as long as you know what you're doing.

If you're thinking right now, "Is this worth the money"? I'd say, "yes" simply because of the quality and fact that I'm sure you'll see yourself using this on more than one or two projects :-)

Very Heavy, leaves black stains on edges

First, the sanding block is very heavy, weighing in at 3/4 lb. This heavy weight makes it very tiring to use.
Second, this is a one piece block with rubber edges that have to be folded up to secure the sandpaper. Very inconvenient to change sandpaper (unlike the two-piece blocks that I was used to). Third, if you are trying to sand a corner, and the side of the block comes into contact with the corner, the sanding block material rubs off, leaving an ugly black stain. Otherwise, it works fine.

Nice and heavy, nice flat bottom/sanding surface. I bought one at "that cheap tool store" and it feels too light, gripping surface is too smooth/slippery, and the bottom surface was wavy. This 3M sanding block is way better quality. And the material/ rubber its made of is easy to hold and grip. Not slippery at all. 4 stars only because the molding on sides was a little irregular. That wont affect the performance, just maybe the life of the block down the road .

It's a good product and does what it's meant to, but it's surprisingly heavy - ok if you're sanding from above, but if you're doing a vertical surface then you'd better have strong hands and arms!

I used to have one of these from years ago and it was much lighter and more manageable. I'm hoping I've still got it somewhere and find it.
