I was given a sample Roll of 3Ms Wrap and Repair Silicone Tape (1in x 2 yd) to test and evaluate. I repaired a leaking water hose, a leaking kitchen gasket before calling the plumber. I taped the handle of my shovel that was giving me wood splinters, and taped my finger for a day for good measure. I was very happy with all results. No residue or wear was left on my finger.

Silicon is a remarkable substance. Wikipedia notes that silicon provides minimal heat conduction, toxicity and chemical reactivity. It repels water and can form watertight seals. It is resistant to oxygen, ozone, ultraviolet light and microbial growth. It is stable over a wide range of temperatures. It can be used as electrical insulation and has some fire protection properties. It is highly gas permeable. It sticks to glass. This product sticks to itself when tightly stretched.

What this means to me is that I can:
* Carefully, and not too tightly, temporarily wrap it directly around a wound on my body or repair a medical cast being careful not to cut off circulation.
* Repair glazing seals since silicon sticks well to glass
* Repair gaskets, hoses and leaking pipes around my car, lawn irrigation, pool and general plumbing whether outdoors or indoors. Whether I decide it to be a semi-permanent or temporary fix will depend on how lucky I feel.
* Use it when I am missing electrical tape
* Repair a broken wooden handle on my hammer, shovel, frying pan or anywhere else a more comfortable grip is needed.

The packaging label reads:

"Repair hose, tool, pipe or electrical surfaces with this super stretchy, highly conformable, adhesive-free tape that fuses strongly to itself and can withstand extreme temperatures -85F to 500F.

The tape does not stick to the hose, it sticks to itself, which made me skeptical about it working but it had a number of good reviews so I decided to try it on a heavy duty 3/4 inch garden water hose. I read the instructions and tightly wound the tape over what appeared to be a puncture made by an ice pick. I used the whole roll starting 3 inches and ending 3 inches each side of the puncture. Waited 24 hours and turned on the water which is at standard home 60 psi. It did not hold, it leaked at both ends of the tape. The tape strongly bonded to itself but not to the hose. I was not happy, a total waste of time and money. I took the time to write this in an attempt to help stop people from wasting their time and money as I had.

I thought this would just be handy to have around, but it's better than expected. I don't have any leaking pipes so tried it in other ways. With this awful cold weather, having something on hand to fix a leaking pipe temporarily seemed a good idea. In the meantime I tried it on the handle of an old hammer and it sure became more comfortable. The tape is kind of thick and sticks to itself really well even though there is no adhesive. The directions say to stretch it, but you don't have to pull much to tighten it around whatever.

I added some to the barrel of a pen to make it softer and easier to grasp and liked it so well, I did the same to one I often use in my kitchen to adjust recipes or make notes when my hands are likely to be wet or messy. With this tape on the pen, my grip is much more secure. I cut off a couple of small squares of tape and stuck them to the bottom back corners of a picture that always seem to get crooked. It hasn't moved a bit since I added the tape. Since the tape is silicone, I wondered if it could help make a pot cover handle comfortable to grasp when it's hot. Not only did it cushion the handle and allow me to lift the cover without getting burned, the stuff stayed on perfectly in the dishwasher!

There is a cellophane type of paper rolled up with the silicone tape to allow you to unroll it easily for use. Once you wrap the tape around whatever overlapping it on itself it bonds pretty firmly and doesn't come off. In fact in my first experiments, I wanted to reuse some and had trouble getting it to come unstuck so I know it's very secure. It did with effort and I could reuse it a couple of times although the bond wasn't as strong by the third use. It still stays stuck, but can be unwrapped rather easily.

The cold weather we had recently here in NC caused the drain pipe on the garage utility sink to crack.. The leaking did not start until after everything had thawed out. I thought this tape would be a temporary fix until I could get a new piece of pipe.

I shut off the water to the sink, cleaned and dried the PVC drain pipe and then left it alone for a few days to dry thoroughly.

I followed the package instruction for application . Laying on the concrete floor I started wrapping about 2 inches from one end of the leak and continued 2 inches beyond the leak on the other side of the pipe. so as to have good coverage.

I wrapped it overlapping by half and pulling it taut as I wrapped.

I left it overnight and the next day I turned the water back on to the sink and then ran water in the sink. To my disappointment it did not fix the problem.

I am a widow, living alone and while I do not profess to be a plumber I have successfully installed all new sinks, ( 6 total) faucets ( 8 sets) 1 bathroom vanity, water lines for a new dish washer , installed a new clothes washer etc.

I have inspected the area several times and am unable to come up with a reason as to why it did not stop the leak.

Based on my experience I would hesitate to recommend.
